Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner became the first skydiver to break the speed of sound in a 24-mile-high jump from a balloon on Sunday, reaching 833.9 mph in a free fall that lasted some 9 minutes.

Landing on his feet in the New Mexico desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of onlookers and friends.

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after safely returning to Earth.

Here's a gallery of photos from Baumgartner's leap into the record books.

Texas Ranch Cloned Horses Competition: VIDEO

Texas Ranch Cloned Horses Competition ? ?In the 16 years since cloned sheep Dolly was introduced to the world, cloning animals has become fairly common practice. ?People can pay good money to get their pets cloned, farmers are using cloning for their livestock, and now horse rodeo and polo competitors are making copies of former equine champions.

?

Animals that have been cloned since 1996:

1?Camel
2?Carp
3?Cat
4?Cattle
5?Deer
6?Dog
7?Ferret
8?Frog (tadpole)
9?Fruit Flies
10?Gaur
11?Goat
12?Horse
13?Mice
14?Mouflon
15?Mule
16?Pig
17?Pyrenean ibex
18?Rabbit
19?Rat
20?Rhesus Monkey
21?Sheep
22?Water Buffalo
23?Wolf

Are cloned animals (like livestock specifically), safe? According to the FDA? yes:

?In 2001, when it became apparent that animal cloning may become a commercial venture to help improve the quality of herds, FDA requested livestock producers and researchers to keep food from animal clones or their offspring out of the food supply. Since then, FDA has conducted an intensive evaluation that included examining the safety of food from these animals and the risk to animal health.

Based on a final risk assessment, a report written by FDA scientists and issued in January 2008, FDA has concluded that meat and milk from cow, pig, and goat clones and the offspring of any animal clones are as safe as food we eat every day.?

Spain says investors' mood improving, liquidity strong

TOKYO (Reuters) - Spain on Saturday said investor sentiment over its fiscal situation was improving, leaving the country in a strong position to meet its financial obligations through year-end.

The Spanish government is considering tapping euro zone rescue funds and an unlimited bond-buying program from the European Central Bank to ease financing tensions and get breathing space to reform its crippled economy.

Banking and financial sources told Reuters earlier this year that international investors had deserted Spain's bond market, leaving national lenders as the only buyers.

But Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Saturday that Treasury data showed that foreign investors were coming back.

"According to data held by the Treasury, the atmosphere, in relation to Spain, is much more optimistic now than it was three or four months ago," he said at a news conference on the sidelines of the semi-annual International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Tokyo.

"I believe that right now there is an interest, there is an interest in Spain's public debt. I believe that it is fundamental in the future to reduce the volatility of Spain's public debt, which would attract additional orders."

De Guindos said he had met several key investors in Tokyo, including BlackRock's chief executive Larry Fink and Citigroup Alternative Investments' head Vikram Pandit. This followed other meetings with institutional investors last week in London.

LIQUIDITY

A source close to the Spanish Treasury told Reuters last month that funds BlackRock and Pimco started to buy Spanish paper shortly after ECB chief Mario Draghi said in late July that he would do whatever it takes to preserve the euro.

The ECB has since then said it stands ready to buy an unlimited quantity of bonds issued by troubled euro zone nations that are under pressure but still able to fund themselves in the market.

In recent weeks, the Spanish Treasury, taking advantage of the improved sentiment, increased the amount of bonds it sells at primary auction from an average of 2.5 billion euros to an average of 4 billion euros.

Spain faces a refinancing hump of 29.5 billion euros at the end of October, including 9 billion euros in short-term paper, for which it appears in good shape.

De Guindos said he was "very comfortable" with the debt repayments.

Spain had a cash buffer of 19 billion euros in August, down from 40 billion euros in May, but the drop reflected a traditional trend during that period that is usually followed by a rebound in September.

Data for September are not yet public and will be key to assess whether the country can weather much longer the financial storm without outside help.

Election 2012 - Tax Reform Not Campaign Issue, Again

he Obama campaign team has mentioned taxation and wrongly criticized that tax cuts are only for the rich. Early in the campaign there was a big stink about how Romney paid less of a percentage in taxes (legally owed through legal deductions) compared to more than others paid. However, since the tax code is levied by percentage, Romney paid, in dollars, much more than both Obama and Biden paid altogether. He also contributed almost 25% of his earning for last year to charitable institutions ? also far more than the combined amounts of Obama and Biden.
The opposition, Romney/Ryan team did not come back with this common sense answer to their allegations and misconceptions: If the tax code is unfair, why do we still have it? It was declared by the Supreme Court in 1895 that the Wilson-Gorman Act was unconstitutional because it was a ?direct tax? and other factors in their decision. It was a tax that levied 2% tax on income of $4,000 or more, which was 2% of American taxpayers. The tax was also applied to net profits of corporations, companies, and associations. In constitutional arguments in Pollock v. Farmers? Loan and Trust Co., the plaintiffs insisted that the income tax was a direct tax, the law taxing real property, which was equivalent to a property tax and a direct tax. Article I, Section 9, United States Constitution:
No capitation or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or Enumeration ?
In addition, the plaintiffs used the uniformity clause of the Constitution in Article I, Section 8:
?all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States.
This means that the present tax code of progressive tax rates according to income is unconstitutional because it is not ?uniform? like a flat tax would be. To make a long story short, the Wilson-Gorman law was thrown out by a 5-4 Supreme Court justice vote. They declared that taxes on income were constitutional. Therefore, what Congress did to get their way was to introduce and pass the Sixteenth Amendment so as to allow taxation upon income as a law. The next argument that arose was that the 16th Amendment was never ratified, [Christopher S. Jackson,?The Inane Gospel of Tax Protest: Resist Rendering Unto Caesar - Whatever His Demands, 32 Gonzaga Law Review 291, at 301-303 (1996-97)] and it reads:
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
In every instance of a court case, the ratification argument has been rejected on several occasions. Arguments against the income tax system are that it is overly complex, unfair in that not everyone pays the same or pays at all (after deductions and yearly paperwork submittal). The unconstitutional power of the IRS causes income tax to be abusive infringing upon and affording government the power of intrusion upon our individual rights, liberties, and right to choose. Therefore, because of the 16th Amendment, the income tax is constitutional. However, it still remains to be overly complicated (not even folks at IRS understand it fully), inefficient (too many loopholes), unfair (not everyone pays the same tax rate), and intrusive - what right under natural law does any person, entity, or government have to take a portion of wages you have earned before you get to spend it and decide when and where it is to be spent? It is an immoral tax and a tax that taxes money several times ? ?taxation upon taxation?. So why hasn?t Congress repealed the 16th Amendment and replaced the tax system? For one, it would be a great tax to enact the change ? politicians do not like working for their annual wages. Secondly, the outcry is not strong enough because those that pay little or no tax do not stand up in defiance because it does not involve them. This ?47%?, brought up by Romney recently and used as a political tool by Obama team, and Romney was telling the truth. However, his figures include seniors who are collecting Social Security as a sole, fixed income (who do not have to pay taxes on income). Regardless, the system is not fair on those terms. Motley Fool published an excellent article on the nonsensical logic of government defending and keeping the income tax system. It shows that tax dollars are being spent bribing American companies to finance corporate investments with debt ? which was part of the cause of the Crash of 2008.
? ?I'm trying to point out a travesty of modern finance: the unequal treatment of?debt?and equity, better known as the tax-deductibility of?interest. Thanks to interest deductibility, our tax code unfairly benefits companies that lever themselves to the moon -- e.g., big banks -- while putting those who choose?equity financing?-- like?Apple?-- at a comparative disadvantage. And the disparity is real. The Congressional Budget Office finds that equity-financed corporate investments pay an effective?tax rate?of 36.1%, while debt-financed investments pay an?effective tax rate?of -6.4%. Yes, that's a negative tax rate for debt-financed corporate investment. Taxpayers are paying corporations to lever up. It's totally unfair and unwise.
What this means is the current tax law puts a lower tax burden on firms that use debt financing than on those that use the equity market to finance new projects. The Fair Tax Act eliminates corporate tax and its complications and removes the tax system from financing decisions and creates an even field. Presently some corporations pay more than others, while some pay none at all. This is what people are calling ?corporate welfare?.
Under the FairTax, the corporate?income tax,?dividend?tax,?capital gains tax, payroll taxes, and individual?income taxes?(including any?taxes on interest) would be completely eliminated.?Instead, a national sales tax of 23% would be levied on all new goods and services. An "advanced refund" mechanism would also be put in place to ensure that the tax does not hurt those below the poverty line. I'm not the best one to explain the details, so I recommend checking out the?FairTax website. If nothing is taxed besides sales, there can be no perverse tax incentives to lever or de-lever. Debt and equity are truly on an equal footing, as they should be.
  • Create a level playing field in taxation.
  • Encourage people to save.
  • Actually increase the revenue for government.
  • Forcing Congress to maintain a fiscal budget by reducing spending because they can only spend according to that budget. (this part would have to be incorporated with a constitutional amendment that directs the action)
  • It will remove all loopholes, as well as the expense of government to counter tax evaders.
  • The tax code laws will be simple and consistent. Every year tax rules change in order to please one group or another, yet providing a barrier to another group in keeping ahead of the earning versus tax rate.
  • Taxes will be based on what people purchase, not what people earn ? no need for loopholes.
  • Government would save millions on paperwork and auditing would no longer be required, which means the IRS will become just a small auditing department and lose its abusive powers.
In the aforementioned explanation, I demonstrated that some corporations do get over on taxation the way the present system works. The Fair Tax Act of 2011 would automatically, even at a flat rate across the board, receive more tax funding from the wealthiest and be fair for those who are within the ?poor? income bracket. The more income one has the more money is spent, therefore the ?wealthy? will pay more in taxes and the class envious will have nothing to whine about. In every election, this issue is ignored or little mention by any candidate; when it is one of the most important in terms of our economic survival. It will also solve the issue of fairness, simplicity, and reduce greatly intrusiveness of government in the private sector. [See HR 25 and S-13] The act would require that the 16th Amendment be simultaneously repealed when the Fair Tax Act is passed (and signed). [H.J. Res. 16]

New studies reveal connections between animals' microbial communities and behavior

New studies reveal connections between animals' microbial communities and behavior

Saturday, October 13, 2012

New research is revealing surprising connections between animal microbiomes?the communities of microbes that live inside animals' bodies?and animal behavior, according to a paper by University of Georgia ecologist Vanessa O. Ezenwa and her colleagues. The article, just published in the Perspectives section of the journal Science, reviews recent developments in this emerging research area and offers questions for future investigation.

The paper grew out of a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on new ways to approach the study of animal behavior. Ezenwa, an associate professor in the UGA Odum School of Ecology and College of Veterinary Medicine department of infectious diseases, and her coauthors were interested in the relationship between animal behavior and beneficial microbes.

Most research on the interactions between microbes and their animal hosts has focused on pathogens, Ezenwa said. Less is known about beneficial microbes or animal microbiomes, but several recent studies have begun to explore these connections.

"We know that animal behavior plays a critical role in establishing microbiomes," she said. "Once they're established, the microbiomes then influence animal behavior in lots of ways that have far-reaching consequences. That's what we were trying to highlight in this article."

Bumble bees, for example, obtain the microbes they need through social contact with nest mates, including consuming their nest mates' feces?a not uncommon method for animals to acquire microbes. Green iguanas establish their intestinal microbiomes by feeding first on soil and later on the feces of adult iguanas.

"There are a lot of behaviors that animals might have that allow them to get the different microbes they need at different points of their lives," Ezenwa said.

Microbes, in their turn, influence a wide range of animal behaviors, including feeding, mating and predator-prey interactions.

One recent study found that fruit flies prefer to mate with others that have microbiomes most similar to their own. Another found that African malaria mosquitoes were less attracted to humans who had a greater diversity of microbes on their skin, possibly because certain microbes produce chemicals that repel these mosquitoes.

Other studies have focused on understanding the mechanisms by which microbes influence behavior.

"Recent experiments have been able to assess the molecules that are involved in communication between microbes in the gut and the brain of mice, showing that microbes are associated with shifts in things like depression and anxiety in these mice," she said. "There are huge implications in the role these microbes play in regulating neural function."

Ezenwa's own work involves investigating how social behavior and interactions between organisms might increase their likelihood of acquiring parasites and pathogens. She is starting a new project examining animal behavior and microbiomes in relation to infectious disease.

"As in the example of the bumble bees, behavior might control the microbes an animal acquires, and those microbes might then influence the animal's vulnerability to pathogens," she said.

The authors conclude that it will take a combination of molecular and experimental approaches to answer questions about the complex interactions between microbiomes and animal behaviors.

"This is a new, emerging topic that's worthy of much more investigation," Ezenwa said.

For Erdogan quarrel with Assad is one thing, Putin another

ISTANBUL/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Standing up to Bashar al-Assad is one thing. Picking a fight with Vladimir Putin would be something else entirely.

By forcing down an airliner flying from Moscow, and publicly accusing Russia of ferrying military equipment to Damascus, Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has taken what may prove to be the biggest gamble yet in his Syria policy.

The incident risks damaging a carefully nurtured relationship with an irascible Russian superpower at a time when Ankara needs all the friends it can get.

For more than a year the two have kept disagreement over Syria from spilling over into a relationship governed by Turkish need for energy supplies, Russian desire for pipeline routes and mutual security interests across an array of regional hotspots.

"The risk now is that Syria is the wedge that forces apart what had been a growing and dynamic partnership between Moscow and Ankara," said Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College.

"Because the grounding of the plane was done in such a public manner, Putin will see this as a direct challenge," he said of the Russian president.

Russia provides nearly two-thirds of Turkey's gas supplies and often ramps up its exports to the country during frequent cuts in Iranian gas supplies in the winter. Russia is also set to help build Turkey's first nuclear power plant.

Russia also plans to build its 63 billion cubic meter South Stream pipeline through Turkey's waters to feed Europe. The plan raises Turkey's profile as a partner in the project and gives both countries incentives to maintain friendship.

Officials in Turkey's energy ministry say they see little likelihood that those relationships would be harmed over Syria.

"Both countries need each other. This reciprocal need will ensure that the energy sector remains protected," said Turkish energy analyst Haluk Direskeneli.

Improved relations with Russia are particularly valuable for Turkey at a time when its leading role in opposition to Assad has cost it other friendships in its region. Iran, Assad's biggest backer, has become embittered, and a decision to host an Iraqi Sunni fugitive vice president has deeply hurt Ankara's ties with Baghdad.

"Russia and Turkey had been in the middle of a rapprochement unique in the history of Russian-Turkish relations. This seems to have destroyed that, at least for now," said Andrew Kuchins, head of the Russia program at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

INCREASING ISOLATION

Erdogan has said the Syrian Air Airbus A-320, forced to land in Ankara on Wednesday after the Turks received an intelligence tip-off, was carrying Russian-made munitions bound for Syria's defense ministry.

One source close to the Turkish government suggested Turkey could have avoided trouble if it had intercepted the flight in secret and warned the parties involved privately, rather than making strong public statements. Its rhetoric rather than its actions were the source of its problems, the source said.

Two days after the plane was intercepted, the Turkish authorities have yet to give any details on what was in the seized cargo. Russia has received no response to its requests for information, a Russian foreign ministry source said.

Turkey, the only member of the NATO Western military alliance that borders Syria, has felt increasingly isolated over its role as one of the main opponents of President Assad during a 19-month-old uprising that has killed about 30,000 people.

Ankara has provided sanctuary for rebel officers and led calls for international intervention.

The Turkish military has repeatedly fired across the border over the past ten days in response to gunfire and shelling spilling over from Syria and has warned of a more robust response if Syria fails to contain the violence.

It scrambled two fighter planes to the border on Friday after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian town of Azmarin, right on the frontier.

The stance has won it cheers of approval from the United States, European allies, and NATO - as well as Arab countries ruled by Sunni Muslims who oppose Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect - but little in the way of concrete support.

"Turkey is quite isolated on Syria. We do get routine expressions of support from NATO, from Washington, but they don't really have much flesh to them," said Faruk Logoglu, vice chairman of the main opposition Republic People's Party (CHP).

DECOUPLING

Russia, meanwhile, has been Assad's biggest supporter at the United Nations, and sold Syria $1 billion of arms last year. Yet until now, Ankara has managed to avoid allowing Syria to wreck its relationship with Moscow.

"It is a sensitive issue but there are ways of decoupling the Syrian question from the Turkish-Russian bilateral relationship," former Turkish foreign minister Yasar Yakis, one of the founding members of the ruling AK Party, told Reuters.

"Whether we will be able to achieve it is another question."

Moscow supports Assad both to protect a rare ally in the Middle East, and because Putin believes as a matter of principle that Russia should use its clout to prevent the West from interfering in countries' internal affairs.

An arms industry source said Moscow had not stopped its weapons exports to Damascus, despite Western criticism.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on June 9 that Russia was fulfilling existing contracts for supplies of air defense systems, for use against external attacks, and is not sending Syria weapons that could be used in the internal conflict.

Turkish and Russian media reports said the cargo seized in Turkey included communications equipment, which would fall under what Moscow insists are legal exports.

A local news website in the city of Tula, around 200 km from Moscow and home to several defense industry firms, said the goods came from a factory there which makes air defense systems and other high precision weapons. A representative from the factory told Reuters it has contracts with Syria, but declined to comment further.

A spokesman for Russia's defense export monopoly said it had no arms on the jet, but individual Russian defense companies can sign contracts directly with clients in certain situations.

"If there was some radio-electronic equipment, one possibility is it was illegal smuggling, which means that Syrian authorities dealt directly with those who produce this equipment and they didn't inform Russian authorities. A second variant is that it was a secret operation by the Russian government," said Alexander Golts, a Moscow-based defense analyst.

He said sales, although legal, may be carried out more secretively in order to avoid the kind of diplomatic pressure Russia attracted after shipments of combat helicopters and ammunition to Syria in two separate incidents earlier this year.

For now, Moscow and Ankara appear to be trying to avoid statements that would escalate the quarrel.

Putin held a meeting about Syria with his advisory Security Council on Friday. A report by the state-owned RIA news agency said deteriorating relations between Turkey and Syria were discussed, but made no mention of the plane incident.

Putin had been expected to visit Turkey at the start of next week. Turkish officials said hours before the plane was grounded that Russia had requested the visit be postponed, citing his heavy work schedule.

Asked if the postponement was linked to the grounding, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin and Erdogan had discussed a new date by phone on Monday, two days before the incident, and December 3 was likely.

Texas Tech stuns No. 5 West Virginia 49-14

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) ? Seth Doege passed for six touchdowns and a career-high 499 yards while Texas Tech's defense shut down Geno Smith and No. 5 West Virginia as the Red Raiders upset the Mountaineers 49-14 on Saturday.

Red Raider fans stormed the field after the win, the most lopsided Texas Tech victory ever over a team ranked in the top five.

Texas Tech's defense consistently stymied West Virginia's offense. Heisman Trophy hopeful Smith completed 29 of 55 passes for 275 yards but couldn't get the ball in the end zone.

The Red Raiders offense had no such trouble.

"When you don't have a pass rush it's a lot easier to make your reads," said Doege, who threw TD passes of 39, 19, 16, 2, 29 and 7 yards. He completed 32 of 42 passes and the six touchdowns matched his career-high. Darrin Moore caught three touchdown passes, which tied his career-high.

Texas Tech (5-1, 2-1) had 18 plays of 15 yards or more, including a 61-yard pass to Jace Amaro and a 53-yard touchdown run by SaDale Foster.

"I thought Seth did a tremendous job running our offense," Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. "He's hard-nosed and he ran the ball."

Amaro finished with five receptions for 156 yards.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 2-1) last week converted all five fourth-down tries in their 48-45 win at Texas, but against the Red Raiders they made just two of seven.

"Those guys did a great job of just attacking us," Smith said. "They attacked us the entire game."

Doege had one interception, an improvement over the five he'd thrown in the previous two games.

"He came out and played loose and he was on-point today," Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown said.

The win for Texas Tech was the second over a top 10 team in as many seasons. The Red Raiders beat then-No. 3 Oklahoma 41-38 to break the Sooners' 39-game win streak in Norman.

On seven first-half possessions the Red Raiders scored touchdowns on five. Texas Tech wasn't as efficient in the second half but by then they were so far ahead it didn't matter.

The Mountaineers fell short of their scoring average (52) by 38 points and got just one touchdown in the second half and that came when the game was already out of reach.

Dustin Garrison scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter to make it 49-14.

The Mountaineers had the third-worst pass defense coming into the game (336 yards) and didn't do anything to improve on that.

The Red Raiders, meanwhile, started fast and kept the Mountaineers off balance. By the time it was all over, they had 168 rushing yards on 29 carries and passed the ball 43 times.

After the Mountaineers failed to convert on fourth-and-3 deep in Texas Tech territory, Doege needed just three plays to get his third touchdown of the game. The senior quarterback first connected with Amaro on a short pass along the near sideline and the receiver turned it into a 61-yard gain ? Texas Tech's longest play from scrimmage this season ? to the Mountaineers 21.

Two plays later, Doege hit Marcus Kennard for 16-yard touchdown pass to put the Red Raiders up 21-7.

Texas Tech's offense already was in rhythm by then, going up 14-0 in the first quarter. Doege hit a wide-open Amaro over the middle at about the 20-yard line and he ran it in for a 39-yard touchdown on the Red Raiders first possession.

Doege then found Eric Ward on a fade route on the far corner of the end zone to put Texas Tech up 14-0.

The Mountaineers answered, momentarily. Smith started with a short field after the Red Raiders squibbed the kickoff. Five plays later Stedman Bailey dived to pull in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Smith and pull West Virginia within 14-7. The drive included a 38-yard pass from Smith to Tavon Austin.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (c.) leaves a branch office of her National League for Democracy party during her visit to Thone Gwa township in Yangon, Myanmar, Thursday, Oct. 11.

Larry Diamond writes in the Atlantic of the recent 17-day US tour by Myanmar (Burma) pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi ? the first since her release from house arrest in November 2010.

Mr. Diamond writes that Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi?s ?moral authority has grown through personal suffering and sacrifice? after decades of house arrest and persecution under the military junta in Myanmar, where a fledging democracy is now beginning to take hold.

But it is Aung San Suu Kyi?s ?spirit of pragmatism and dialogue? that holds a relevant lesson for American politics. As she told her fellow Burmese in the audience during her American tour, ?We must learn to compromise without regarding it as humiliation.?

When Aung San Suu Kyi was asked if she aspires to rule her country, Diamond noted that ?rather than shying away from politics, she embraced it. ?You should think of me as a political party leader. I was a politician before I was a ?democracy icon.? ?

Diamond concludes, ?At a time of rampant cynicism about parties and politicians in the United States, it is invigorating to have a ?democracy icon? remind us that politics can be a noble calling ? and an indispensable means for advancing the public good.?

Commentators have done plenty of hand-wringing over the Internet?s corrosive effects on civil society. But not to be neglected are the triumphs of the digital realm ? and its sometimes life-changing human impacts.

Vanity Fair?s David Kushner found one such story in the incredible saga of Saroo Brierley. As a 5-year-old in India, he was separated from his older brother at a train station, and through a series of dramatic turns, found himself lost among the poor and homeless on the streets of Calcutta. Taken in by an orphanage, he was eventually adopted by Australian parents.

Mr. Brierley adjusted well to his new life, but after graduating from college in 2009, he hit a rough patch: ?After years of ignoring his past, it finally came crashing back ? the desire to find his roots, and himself.?

Enter Google Earth. Brierley used the program?s satellite imagery to search for his home village in India ? whose geographic location and name he did not know. ?All he had was a laptop and some hazy memories, but Saroo was going to try.?

Dr. Oz's Five Weight Loss Tips for Women Over 40. ? Alternative ...

Posted by: Christopher Maloney, Naturopathic Doctor | October 12, 2012

Carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine

I was excited to read Dr. Oz?s acknowledgement of a role for hormones in weight loss:? ?Hormones can really slow your weight loss efforts.?

So the top five weight loss tips must cover hormonal balancing, right?

Here they are quickly and then individually.

1) Konjac Fiber 2) Raspberry Ketones 3) L-Carnitine 4) White Kidney Bean Extract and 5) ?exercising smarter, not harder.

Ok, I don?t see anything specific for women, and nothing for over forty, and nothing directly to do with hormones.? But I could be wrong, so let?s break this down tip by tip.

First Konjac Fiber.? It just sounds sexy and exotic.? Like Cognac.? Wikipedia offers the alarming story of possible choking on Konjac candy:? ?Some products formed a gel strong enough such that only chewing, not tongue pressure or breathing pressure, could disintegrate the gel.?

But who cares?? Will it help me lose weight?? Evidently, yes, according to a small study of twenty obese patients.? Konjac?fiber broken down into Glucomannan did help patients lose over five pounds when consumed before every meal, that was in 1984.

If it works so well, why aren?t we seeing more studies?? Well, in 2007 they repeated the study, this time with a placebo group who just dieted.? The results were that?both groups lost weight, and the Konjac root didn?t make any real difference.

So not really that helpful?? Or maybe helpful when you don?t want to diet?? You decide.

2) Raspberry Ketones.? I?ve talked about these little beauties before.? But I did a good faith check online.??Medline still shows no human studies, and the one animal study gave an image of weight gain?prevention rather than fat loss.

3) L-Carnitine? is a great thing to think about, because it is involved in multiple body processes.? And it did help fat cats burn up extra weight.? But it also helps wasting cancer patients hold onto their weight.? According to a nice synopsis of Carnitine?s effects in the body, ?Because L-carnitine and its esters help reduce oxidative stress, they have been proposed as a treatment for many conditions.?? But Carnitine?s effect on weight loss hasn?t got human studies to back it up.

4)? White Kidney Bean Extract ? studied primarily for it?s effect on blocking the amylase enzyme.? Without that enzyme, your body can?t break down and absorb carbohydrates.? Sort of a ?let them eat cake and still lose weight? fantasy, but does it work?? Only if you goose the numbers.? The difference between white beaners and placebo were significant when both were dieting, but?the beaners?did better if a lot of carbs were involved.? Another study found the same thing.? So if you want to eat a cake, bring along your extract?so it passes right through you (no word on the side effects of not properly digesting your own carbs were presented).

5)? ?Exercise?smarter, not harder.?? Isn?t that a franchise slogan?? It should? be.? What we?re really saying here is that too much exercise can make you so hungry you stop dieting.? So don?t overdo.

What does any of this have to do with being an over-forty woman?? Nothing.

Since you?ve read this far, let me give you five tips for over-forty women.

1)? Get your hormones checked and rechecked.? Things like thyroid levels can bounce around like a ping pong?ball during perimenopause, which can last for years.

2)? Learn to balance your hormones.? Diet and lifestyle can take you far, but if you need help to make the transition into the second half of your life, then get help.

3)? Keep track of what foods annoy, and be aware of overdoing by combining things.? (Alcohol and cake, prescriptions and fried food).

4)? Sleep and relaxation are mandatory, not optional.? If you want your hormones to stay in control, you have to make your rest a priority.

5)? When in doubt, flush it out.? Don?t be afraid to take a few days to alter your diet and routine dramatically when things are slowly going downhill.?? Too often you end up dragging for weeks before you realy crash.

Thanks for reading!

The NFL's Campaign Against Breast Cancer Is A Total Scam

Jezebel:

Have you noticed that during the month of October, the NFL suddenly becomes intensely concerned with making sure you're aware of breast cancer? Pink jerseys! Huge Ass Pink Ribbons at midfield! Pink motherfucking cleats! Fans interested in aware-ing on their own can even click on over to the NFL's store and purchase ugly pink crap of their own under the assumption that their good intentions will actually contribute to the fight against cancer. Well, I hate to burst your Pepto Bismo Pink bubble, wearers of dangly earrings that contain both ribbons and tiny footballs, but you've been had ? the NFL's Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign does raise itsy bitsy amounts of money for the fight against cancer, but the amount of money it raises pales in comparison to the amount of money it raises for billionaire NFL owners.

Read the whole story at Jezebel

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 coming to Canada on October 30

Android Central

TELUS and Mobilicity have confirmed that they will be offering the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to Canadians on October 30. Mobilicity was a little coy about the information, nestling it into the e-mail response after signing up on their preorder page, while TELUS had the date front and center on their site. To encourage sign-ups, Mobilicity offered $50 off the cost of the giant new smartphone, though like every other carrier, they didn't mention anything about full pricing.

No doubt Bell, Rogers, and WIND won't be far behind in letting us know when the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will be available on their shelves. Either way, it's good news since we weren't expecting the Note 2 to land in North America until mid-November. There's a lot of great stuff going on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, as you can see in our hands-on video. Here are main points.

  • Network: 3G: HSPA+ 21Mbps (HSDPA 21Mbps / HSUPA 5.76Mbps); 4G LTE: 100Mbps/ 50Mbps
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz quad-core processor
  • Display: 5.5” HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720)
  • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Camera: Main(Rear): 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash, BSI; Sub(Front): 1.9 Megapixel VT Camera, BSI; Best Photo, Best Faces, Low light shot
  • GPS: A-GPS; Glonass
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth® v 4.0 (Apt-X Codec support) LE; USB 2.0 Host; WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 & 5 GHz), Wi-Fi HT40; Wi-Fi Direct; mHL; NFC
  • Memory: 16/32/64GB User memory + 2GB (RAM); microSD (up to 64GB)
  • Battery: Standard battery, Li-ion 3,100mAh

It's great to see such a broad release across Canada, but it certainly makes picking a carrier a bit more of a challenge for customers that are able to move around. Canadians, which provider would you go with? Is the lack of LTE on WIND or Mobilicity a deal-breaker?

Carpenter pitches Cards past Nats 8-0 for 2-1 lead

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chris Carpenter was every bit the postseason ace he's been in the past for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012, missing a rib after surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, rookie Pete Kozma delivered a three-run homer, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series.

"If the baseball world doesn't know what an amazing competitor he is by now, they haven't been paying any attention," Carpenter's teammate Matt Holliday said. "Every guy on this team has watched him work his way back, watches him in between starts. He's a stud. Just a guy that you want out there."

All in all, it was quite a damper on the day for a Nationals Park-record 45,017 red-wearing, towel-twirling fans witnessing the first major league postseason game in the nation's capital in 79 years.

Three relievers finished the shutout for the Cardinals, who can end the best-of-five series in Thursday's Game 4 at Washington.

"We're not out of this, by a long shot," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "Shoot, I've had my back to worse walls than this."

Kyle Lohse will start for St. Louis. Ross Detwiler pitches for Washington, which is sticking to its long-stated plan of keeping Stephen Strasburg on the sideline the rest of the way.

The Cardinals won 10 fewer games than the majors-best Nationals this season and finished second in the NL Central, nine games behind Cincinnati, sneaking into the postseason as the league's second wild-card under this year's new format. But the Cardinals become a different bunch in the high-pressure playoffs ? no matter that slugger Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa are no longer around.

Carpenter still is, even though even he didn't expect to be pitching this year when he encountered problems during spring training and needed an operation in July to correct a nerve problem. The top rib on his right side was removed, along with connecting muscles.

He returned Sept. 21, going 0-2 in three starts totaling 17 innings, so it wasn't clear how he'd fare Wednesday.

Yeah, right.

"I'm not going to go out there and compete," Carpenter said, "if I'm not good enough to compete."

Carpenter allowed seven hits and walked two across his 5 2-3 innings to improve to 10-2 over his career in the postseason. That includes a 4-0 mark while helping another group of wild-card Cardinals take the title in the 2011 World Series, when he won Game 7 against Texas.

With the exception of Ian Desmond ? 3 for 4 on Wednesday, 7 for 12 in the series ? the Nationals' hitters are struggling mightily. They've scored a total of seven runs in the playoffs and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base in Game 3.

Rookie phenom Bryce Harper's woes, in particular, stand out: He went 0 for 5, dropping to 1 for 15. He went to the plate with an ash bat and no gloves in the first inning, tried wearing anti-glare tinted contact lenses on a sun-splashed afternoon ? nothing helped.

"Carp's been a dominant pitcher his whole career. Big-game pitcher. He showed up," Washington's Jayson Werth said. "He pitched well today. We had him in some spots. We had him on the ropes a couple of times. We were just one bloop away from a totally different ballgame."

Carpenter was pretty good with a bat in his hands, too, collecting a pair of hits, including a double off the wall that was about a foot or two away from being a homer. When he reached second base, he raised his right fist.

Similarly, neither club could be sure which Edwin Jackson would show up for NL East champion Washington, a year after he was part of the Cardinals' championship team: The one who struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run in eight innings against St. Louis on Aug. 30, or the one who lasted only 1 1-3 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Sept. 28.

Much closer to the second version, it turned out, although he did recover from a rough start to retire eight of his last 10 batters Wednesday.

Still, Jackson was done after five innings and four runs.

"I didn't feel like I was out of rhythm. I didn't feel like I couldn't throw strikes. I just missed across the plate with a couple of balls and it cost me," Jackson said.

The Cardinals tacked on four runs off relievers Craig Stammen, Christian Garcia and Ryan Mattheus.

Not since the original Senators lost to the New York Giants in the 1933 World Series had big league baseball stretched past the regular season in Washington. Back then, of course, there was no MLB Network in HD to carry a game the way there was Wednesday; indeed, television itself was in its infancy, period. And spectators in attendance way back then could not enjoy a beer at the ballpark, because prohibition wasn't repealed until a couple of months later.

With the Capitol Dome rising beyond left field, the crowd of today was ready to root, root, root for the home team, breaking into chants of "Let's go, Nats!" after player introductions and again after a four-jet flyover. And, boy, did they boo ? when Cardinals outfielder John Jay was announced as the game's first batter, when catcher Yadier Molina trotted to chat with Carpenter, even when Carpenter paused between pitches to tie his red-and-gray right shoe.

Most of all, they booed when Washington's Danny Espinosa was ruled out at first after bunting in the second. TV replays showed that Espinosa did beat third baseman David Freese's throw, but the call was missed by Jim Joyce ? an umpire best known for blowing a call at first base to ruin Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga's bid for a perfect game in 2010.

Earlier, those boos were directed at Jackson.

The Cardinals opened the second inning with four consecutive hits, the biggest being Kozma's first-pitch homer into the first row in left off a 94 mph fastball to make it 4-0. Kozma took over as the Cardinals' everyday shortstop in September, replacing injured All-Star Rafael Furcal, and only had 72 at-bats during the regular season.

But he's only the latest in a series of "Who's that?" stars of this postseason.

NOTES: Holliday fouled a ball off his left leg in the eighth, stayed in to deliver a two-run single, then left for a pinch runner. ... Frank Robinson, the first manager of the Washington Nationals, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former Senators slugger Frank Howard gets that honor Thursday. ... Lohse got the win when the Cardinals beat the Braves in the wild-card game. ... Detwiler will be making the first postseason appearance of his career. His last regular-season start also came against the Cardinals, and he went only 2 1-3 innings, giving up seven runs. ... Wednesday was the 88th anniversary of Washington's only World Series championship, won by the Senators on Oct. 10, 1924.

Study: Fraud growing in scientific research papers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fraud in scientific research, while still rare, is growing at a troubling pace, a new study finds.

A review of retractions in medical and biological peer-reviewed journals finds the percentage of studies withdrawn because of fraud or suspected fraud has jumped substantially since the mid-1970s. In 1976, there were fewer than 10 fraud retractions for every 1 million studies published, compared with 96 retractions per million in 2007.

The study authors aren't quite sure why this is happening. But they and outside experts point to pressure to hit it big in science, both for funding and attention, and to what seems to be a subtle increase in deception in overall society that science may simply be mirroring.

Fraud in life sciences research is still minuscule and committed by only a few dozen scientific scofflaws. However, it causes big problems, said Arturo Casadevall, a professor of microbiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Casadevall is the lead author of the study which looked at the reasons for 2,047 retractions among many millions of studies published in journals and kept in a government database for medically focused research.

Fraud was the No. 1 cause of retractions, accounting for 43 percent of them. When fraud was combined with other areas of misconduct, such as plagiarism, it explained about 2 out of 3 retractions, the study found.

"Very few people are doing it, but when they do it, they are doing it in areas that are very important," Casadevall said. "And when these things come out, society loses faith in science."

Prominent retractions that Casadevall cited for fraud include a notorious British study that wrongly linked childhood vaccines to autism, nine separate studies on highly touted research at Duke University about cancer treatment, and work by a South Korean cloning expert who later was convicted in court of embezzlement and illegally buying human eggs for research.

Casadevall said he was surprised because he didn't set out to study fraud. His plan was to examine the most common avoidable errors that caused retractions. What he found was that 889 of the more than 2,000 retractions were due to fraud or suspected fraud.

While other studies have shown a rise in retractions, no previous study has found scientific misconduct as the leading cause, said Nicholas Steneck, director of the research ethics program at the University of Michigan, who wasn't involved in the Casadevall study. That shows a need for better, more honest reporting of retractions by the science journals themselves, he said.

He and others also said the findings suggest there may just be better detection of scientific fraud overall.

Most "scientists out there are well meaning and honest people who are going to be totally appalled by this," Casadevall said.

The study was published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which had the second most retracted articles for all reasons, behind only the journal Science.

The publication with the most fraud-based retractions was the Journal of Biological Chemistry. PNAS ranked fifth.

Casadevall said that even if society as a whole has become more deceptive, "I used to think that science was on a different plane. But I think science is like everybody else and that we are susceptible to the same pressures."

In science, he said, "there's a disproportionate reward system" so if a researcher is published in certain prominent journals they are more likely to get jobs and funding, so the temptations increase.

"Bigger money makes for bigger reasons for fraud," said New York University bioethicist Arthur Caplan. "More fame, more potential for profit... Some of the cheating and fraud is not too dissimilar to the cheating and fraud we've seen in banking."

Science historian Marcel LaFollette, author of a book about science fraud "Stealing into Print," said researchers can't prove that more people are lying in general in society, but they get the distinct feeling it's happening more. And in 2006 an Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that while most people say they don't approve of lying, 65 percent of those questioned said it is OK to lie in certain situations.

The world has become accustomed to lying and forgives politicians when they do it in relationships, LaFollette said. But it's different when it's a doctor, scientist or an engineer because people can get hurt, she said.

Casadevall and Caplan pointed to the 1998 study in Lancet by Andrew Wakefield temporarily linking childhood vaccines to autism ? a study later retracted because it was found to be what another scientific journal called "an elaborate fraud."

"Think about the damage society took when mothers started to question vaccines," Casadevall said. "That's damage and it's still going on."

Reached at home in Texas, Wakefield, who was banned from practicing medicine in his native Great Britain and whose claims are contrary to what prevailing established medical research shows about vaccine and autism, said: "There was no fraud and to use this and to use me as a poster child of fraud really compounds that error."

Casadevall said his work is about science trying to clean its own house. And because it's about fraud, he said he did one extra thing with his study: He sent reviewers not just a summary of their work, but all the data, "so they can check on us."
