Megan Fox Wants Kids with "Soulmate" Brian Austin Green

They've been off, they've been on and they've been off again.

But Megan Fox is now committed to Brian Austin Green and wants the world to know.

"We've had obstacles, and we've overcome them," Fox says in the new issue of Cosmopolitan. "I truly feel like he's my soul mate. I don't want to sound corny or cliche, but I do believe we are detained to live this part of our lives together."

Megan Fox Cosmo Cover

And, if the actress has it her way, the couple won't be living this part of their lives together on their own.

Asked about kids, Fox says she wants "at least two, probably three" and refers to herself as "maternal," a classification that might shock many who assume the star to be some kind of bad ass.

"It's because I have tattoos and I say curse words, and apparently, that's crazy," Fox says of that allegation. "I think maybe I give off this energy of seeming like I don't give a f-ck, and that's misinterpreted. But I'm not wild."

Fox is also featured in the latest issue of Miami and tells that publication she wasn't always so drop dead gorgeous.

Small Business Credit Remains Tough to Get

The last quarter saw a dip from 34 to 33 percent in the share of small business owners reporting that credit is difficult to get, according to the most recent Wells Fargo Small Business Survey.

Statistically, however, the share of small business owners reporting trouble obtaining credit has been the same since the third quarter of 2009. The survey, which is based on a nationally representative sample of 600 small business owners whose companies have up to $20 million in annual sales, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

In the figure below, I have plotted the fraction of small business owners reporting that credit was difficult to obtain for each quarter since April 2007. The figure clearly shows three distinct periods in small business owners? perceptions of credit availability: Before the recession, when only a small fraction thought credit was difficult to obtain; during the recession, when the share expressing this view was rising; and during the recovery, when a large fraction has thought that credit was tough to get.

In a nutshell, the Wells Fargo surveys indicate that we are in a period of tighter small business credit than before the Great Recession.

University of Michigan leads study showing TAK-875 helps control blood sugar without increasing risk for hypoglycemia

TAK-875, a new treatment for type 2 diabetes, improves blood sugar control and is equally effective as glimepiride, but has a significantly lower risk of creating a dangerous drop in blood sugar, called hypoglycemia, according to a new study.

The results of the phase 2 randomized trial were published Online First Sunday in The Lancet.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes accounting for 90 percent of the 150 million people in the United States currently living with the disease. It is primarily caused by a lack of response to insulin which leads to high blood sugar and a variety of chronic conditions.

Free fatty acid receptor 1, also known as G protein-coupled receptor 40, or GPR40, plays a vital role in stimulating and regulating the production of insulin.

It works by boosting the release of insulin from pancreatic ?-cells when glucose and fatty acids rise in the blood, such as after a meal, which results in a fall in blood glucose levels. Drugs that activate the FFAR1 receptor have the potential to help diabetics release more insulin and improve control of blood glucose levels.

TAK-875 is a novel oral medication designed to enhance insulin secretion in a glucose-dependant manner, which means that it has no effect on insulin secretion when glucose levels are normal, and as such has the potential to improve the control of blood sugar levels without the risk of hypoglycemia.

In the study, Charles Burant, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System, and colleagues randomly assigned 426 patients with type 2 diabetes who were not achieving adequate glucose control through diet, exercise or metformin treatment to one of five doses of TAK-875, a placebo, or glimepiride, a conventional diabetes treatment. The primary outcome was change in hemogloblin A1c from the start of the study.

At 12 weeks, all doses of TAK-875 resulted in significant drops in HbA1c compared with placebo. A similar reduction occurred in patients given glimepiride.

At a TAK-875 dose of 25 mg or higher, about twice as many patients (33 to 48 percent) reached the American Diabetics Association target of HbA1c less than 7 percent within 12 weeks, compared with placebo (19 percent) and was similar to glimepiride (40 percent).

TAK-875 was generally well-tolerated. The incidence of hypoglycaemia was significantly lower for all doses of TAK-875 compared with glimepiride (2 percent compared to 19 percent), and was similar to placebo which was 2 percent.

The overall incidence of treatment-related side effects was similar for the TAK-875 groups and placebo groups (49 percent; all TAK-875 groups vs 48 percent), but higher in the glimepiride group (61 percent) because of the increased risk of hypoglycaemia.

The authors say: "In view of the frequent hypoglycemia after treatment with sulfonylureas, the low-risk of hypoglycaemia after treatment with TAK-875 suggests that there may be therapeutic advantage of targeting FFAR1 in treating people with type 2 diabetes."

They conclude:"We are truly excited about the potential of TAK-875 and are eager to conduct larger trials to find out how well this drug works, how safe it is and what its place is in the treatment of diabetes.

"TAK-875 significantly improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes with minimum risk of hypoglycemia. The results show that activation of FFAR1 is a viable therapeutic target for treatment of type 2 diabetes," authors say.

Cunning super-parasitic wasps sniff out protected aphids and overwhelm their defenses

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? In the war between parasite and host, the parasitic wasp, Aphidius ervi, and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, are locked in a battle for survival. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biology shows that this cunning parasite sniffs out differences between protected and unprotected aphids, and alters its egg-laying strategy, in order to overwhelm aphid defenses and ensure survival of wasp offspring.

The wasp, A. ervi, lays an egg inside the pea aphid, where the egg hatches and converts the aphid's insides into a wasp nursery. The wasp larva uses the still-living aphid as a food source, eventually pupating inside the aphid and emerging as a fully-formed mature wasp. However the pea aphid is not defenseless. It is protected by a bacterial symbiont Hamiltonella defensa (and its associated bacteriophage APSE).

Although the wasps still lay their eggs, wasp larvae are unable to develop normally. Researchers from the Universities of Georgia and Arizona collaborated with researchers from Akita Prefectural University, Japan, to investigate what tactics the wasps might use to overcome the aphids' symbiont defense strategy. The researchers found that wasps which laid two eggs (superparasitism) in aphids infected with H. defensa and APSE were much more successful at producing live offspring.

However laying two eggs in uninfected hosts had little effect on the number of surviving wasps as only one wasp can complete development in each aphid. This suggests that having twice the amount of factors secreted by the developing wasp overpowers the protection due to bacterial infection, and is an adaption to ensure the survival of one wasp at the cost of two.

In a twist it seems that the wasps are able to work out which aphids are harboring the symbionts and which are not. Dr Kerry Oliver, who led this study, explained, "We discovered that A. ervi would preferentially lay two eggs in infected hosts, and a single egg if the aphids were unprotected. We don't for sure how wasps discriminate, but, when we looked for differences between the aphids, we found that infected aphids produced less of the compound trans-b-farnesene. This compound is a major component of aphid alarm pheromone and wasps are known to use this cue to find hosts."

Whatever the trick that they are using to work out which aphids are infected, wasps appear to be able to lay just enough eggs to stay ahead in the arms race.

Examining The Use Of High Viz Clothes At Work | Pete Benevides ...

One of the challenges of living in the modern world is the necessity of having and holding a job. Because this needs puts workers in a vulnerable position in comparison to those who hire them, societies everywhere have acted to protect the labor force. In addition to reasonable working hours and conditions, personal protective equipment like Hi Viz clothing are required of companies.

There is a scientific approach to safety, beginning with a task analysis and getting corporate clothing, the purpose of which is to identify the steps required to perform the event, and then an analysis of the risks involved. In may warehouse areas the environment itself is problematic, with material handling equipment and pedestrians moving about at the same time. Well marked movement areas and the use of spotters helps, but reduced visibility for operators and distracted pedestrians complicate the situation.

The modern warehouse is a beehive of activity that lies at the heart of many company distribution processes; they are very busy places. In the rush for efficient movement of all the material stored within, material handling equipment is all over the place, and they do not drive like regular automobiles. When transporting heavy or large loads, the operator has to concentrate on that material as well as where he is going, so pedestrians have to make themselves visible.

Warehouse lighting is a perennial problem, as the upkeep and maintenance light fixtures and electrical wiring require lift devices and are therefore more complicated than just changing a bulb in an office. Inclement weather also decreases ambient luminescence and can do so rapidly. Making sure workers see and avoid is an ongoing challenge the requires vigilance and discipline for the good of all.

It is also essential that companies provide such personal protective equipment and ensure that it is worn properly and continuously. Sometimes workers remove protective equipment for comfort or convenience, which may be an indication that the gear provided is not optimal for the job. Matching the clothing to the job is more complicated than it might appear, as anticipating every task over the course of a shift is difficult.

Even selecting the optimum color and type of reflectivity is dependent on the environment. In addition to weather and lighting conditions, the primary background color will affect the visibility of protective material and to what degree reflectivity may be required. Test runs to match the material with the workplace are an essential part of selecting PPE.

In addition to reflectivity and color, , other considerations include fitness to purpose. If the garment creates a hazard because it is too loose and can snag on moving equipment, or is too tight and restricts movements, it can be a greater risk than help. It should also be right for the climate, water repellent when necessary, breathable in summer and warm in winter, because if it is too uncomfortable, it will not be worn.

A leading cause of workplace injury is that workers do not comply with safety policy and procedures. It is a management responsibility to provide PPE and accomplish training on the need and proper use, but workers have a part in the process as well. Contrary to what common sense might indicate, motivating people to be safe is not easy, but failing the task could mean that a worker was injured or killed because he neglected to don his Hi Viz clothing.

Visit Safety Factory to get Hi viz clothing ? an essential part of work safety. Regardless of the business type, wearhouse work will always require certain hi viz clothing

UGA pinpoints important factors in workplace safety - Athens, GA ...

Each year in the U.S., about 6,000 workers die on the job, and millions are injured.

According to a recent University of Georgia study, authored by workplace safety depends on whether:

  1. ???? workers think management emphasizes workplace safety; and
  2. ???? business policies result in interference with family demands.

"We've known for some time that certain occupations are more dangerous than others due to a variety of physical and other hazards," said UGA professor Dave DeJoy. "But in the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that management and organizational factors also play a critical role. That is, actions taken or not taken at the organizational level can either set the stage for injuries or help prevent them."

DeJoy coauthored the study? with Todd Smith, a recent graduate of the Health Promotion and Behavior doctoral program in the UGA College of Public Heallth.

They examined nine factors potentially affecting workplace safety: management-employee relations, participation, safety climate, work-family interference, job content, organizational effectiveness, advancement potential, resource adequacy and supervisor support.

"Most prior research on organizational factors has focused on single occupations or single organizations," says DeJoy. "There has been a clear need to examine these factors across a diverse array of occupations and employment circumstances."

A failure of management

In one of their more interesting findings, they determined that when a worker perceives his or her work environment as safe (as one where management emphasizes on-the-job safety), it can reduce injuries by as much 32 percent. Moreover, businesss that place minimal constraints on worker performance and that run in a smooth and effective manner can reduce injuries by 38 percent.

"Injury is a failure of management,? says DeJoy. ?Organizations who blame individuals for injuries do not create a positive safety climate."

Smith, too, emphasized the organizational factor in safety: "We can design the best safety controls, but they must be maintained, and that falls on management. Enacted policies and procedures?not formalized ones but those acted upon?define a climate of safety."

Home-workplace safety conflicts

The study also found that conflict between family and job demands can increase injuries by as much as 37 percent.

"We used to think work was one thing and family was another,? says DeJoy, ?but now there is a realization that work-life balance affects performance and productivity."

The results of the study were published online in January in a paper entitled up ?Occupational Injury in America: An analysis of risk factors using data from the General Social Survey (GSS)? and will appear in the March issue of the Journal of Safety Research.

Protect Your Car And Your Family With Salt Lake Auto Insurance ...

Buying the right Salt Lake auto insurance for your car is essential to prevent financial difficulties when an accident occurs. The article below will describe how to ask the right questions from your broker or agent, what coverage to buy and how to avoid duplicate coverage. Read the article and ask the right questions from your insurance professional.

One option you always have to help decrease your insurance payments is to raise your comprehension and collision deductibles. Because people with higher deductibles typically file fewer claims, insurance companies typically charge less for customers who maintain a high deductible. The higher you deductible, the higher the amount you will have to pay out of pocket in the event of an accident.

You can save a lot of money if you have aN accident and you have good coverage. Individuals pay a pre-set deductible, but the insurance should cover some costs.

When shopping for vehicle insurance coverage for your teen, ask your agent to give you a quote, both as a separate policy and also as an addition to your existing policy. Depending on the vehicles involved it is sometimes cheaper overall to buy them a different policy.

In most states you are required to have a liability insurance in order to get your car on the road. You need to know what is required by your state, and what the minimum coverage is that you need. If you lack insurance and are involved in a wreck, not only can it be financially disastrous, but you will also be violating the law.

Don?t just accept the first insurance quote you get. There are different formulas that every company uses to determine your insurance premium. By researching many competitors, it becomes easier to find a good deal and save money.

Consider how much monthly insurance rates will be before purchasing a car. Auto insurance companies look more favorably on safer car choices. Sportier cars are frowned upon and will cost you more. Take these differences into account when selecting your new car.

You need to maintain a clean license. Your insurance will be very expensive if you have a lot of traffic citations and accidents on your driving record. If you do have a poor driving record, taking a defensive driving record can improve it and help you get lower insurance rates.

How the 'Quarter' Horse won the rodeo

Friday, February 17, 2012

American Quarter Horses are renowned for their speed, agility, and calm disposition. Consequently over four million Quarter horses are used as working horses on ranches, as show horses or at rodeos. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genomics used 'next-generation' sequencing to map variation in the genome of a Quarter Horse mare. Analysis of genetic variants associated with specific traits showed that compared to a Thoroughbred the Quarter Horse's genome was enriched for variants in genes involved in sensory perception, signal transduction and the immune system.

Quarter horses have been selectively bred to improve speed over short distances. However they also prone to some disorders such as hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA) where their skin is fragile and tears easily.

Researchers from Texas A&M University sequenced a Quarter Horse genome with the aim of finding what makes these horses so special. They looked at genetic variants, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), copy number variants (CNV), insertions and deletions (INDELs), as well as mutations associated with performance traits and diseases which are responsible for the makeup of these horses. By comparing the Quarter Horse's sequence with that of a Thoroughbred, over three million of these variations were found. With the help of a human gene identification library, pathways, traits and diseases associated with the variations and mutations found in the horse were identified.

Dr Scott Dindot from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary medicine explained, "When we compared the genomic sequence of our mare to that of a Thoroughbred genome, we found that the Quarter horse had more genetic variation - especially in genes involved in sensory perception, immunity, and cellular processes. When we looked for disease causing mutations and variants associated with performance traits we discovered that the Quarter Horse was heterozygous for a mutation in the cyclophilin B gene which is responsible for HERDA, and a SNP associated with chestnut coat color. The horse also had SNPs associated with racing endurance, originating in Thoroughbreds, which may explain the Quarter Horse's speed and stamina."

The sequencing of horse genome has been of great benefit to equine breeders and veterinary medicine because of the possibilities of improving health and performance. This information can also be used to understand the theory underlying horse evolution. Recently mitochondrial sequencing of domestic horses and a Przewalski horse was able to show that most of the genetic variation between modern breeds was already present in ancestral stock. This new research, the first to use next-generation sequencing, has provided information which will be a useful resource in understanding the genetic basis behind horse breeds and disease.

Rebranding Sarkozy: Too sullied a sell for 2012? (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? In February 2007, a fiery Nicolas Sarkozy had millions convinced that he - a go-getter abandoned as an infant by his Hungarian father - would break with the past, end chronic unemployment and restore a sense of pride to France.

His luster began fading within hours of his May 6 election win, as he celebrated with corporate chiefs and pop stars at a gaudy nightspot and set a presidential tone many French people soon felt was showy, impulsive and even vulgar.

Now rated France's most unpopular president, he trails Socialist Francois Hollande in opinion polls for an April-May election at a critical moment for Europe. Sarkozy will struggle to recover in time for a vote whose outcome may well influence economic reform in France and across the euro area.

Aides say when he launches his campaign in the next few days Sarkozy will apologize for failing to keep pledges derailed by the debt crisis but insist he is the best person to revive the French economy. He will champion reforms to boost competitiveness and slim the welfare state.

That may not be enough to overcome a visceral dislike of Sarkozy among many voters, even in his own conservative camp, an issue that weighs on him, members of his inner circle say. Painstaking efforts to project a calmer, more presidential manner have so far failed to convince the public.

Three years have passed since the most striking episodes - his penchant for flashy watches and yachts, his public wooing of model Carla Bruni, an attempt to give his student son a public job and his telling a man in a crowd to "Get lost, jerk."

He has worked to diminish an early impression of being impatient, pushy, fidgety and brusque.

But the passion with which many French people vilify him is extraordinary and suggests the magic he worked in 2007, filling auditoriums with thunderous applause, may not work again.

"He knows he is disliked and he suffers internally from this personal rejection," one of Sarkozy's advisers said on condition of anonymity. "Of course we talk about it with him but it's very awkward and it will be hard to overcome it in the campaign. The French don't want some kind of sentimental circus."

While his hands-on style of governing won Sarkozy plaudits during the 2008 financial crisis and last year's Libyan uprising, his micromanaging of ministries and a manner molded more on British prime ministers than his aloof predecessors has become a handicap, aides say. Interior Minister Claude Gueant, one of Sarkozy's most loyal aides over the years and an architect of his 2007 campaign, acknowledged the problem on television in early February.

"It's true that in 2007 people felt an affectionate impulse towards Nicolas Sarkozy. Over the course of time an affection deficit has been created," Gueant said.

A redoubtable campaigner who is at his best in a crisis, Sarkozy will strive in a rapid-fire nine-week campaign to keep the focus on his credibility as a leader, people in his inner circle say, and shrug off misgivings over his character.

That tactic was behind his effort in January to woo back the Paris press pack, which he has mostly kept at arm's length, opening up in an informal three-hour chat to reporters on a trip to French Guiana where he conceded he could lose the election.

"He knows this election is different but believes he can win if he is the most credible candidate," said Eric Raoult, Mayor of Paris suburb Le Raincy and a friend of Sarkozy for some 30 years. "People can say they are disappointed with him or can't stand him on a personal level, but he's still the one they want at the controls."

WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG?

Sarkozy came to power vowing to achieve full employment by the end of his term and raise purchasing power, summed up in the slogan "work more to earn more." He promised a break with the stagnation of Jacques Chirac's latter years.

He pushed through a widely praised higher education reform in 2009 that gave universities more autonomy and in late 2010 he saw off street protests to raise the retirement age by two years to 62. He cut taxes on hours worked above the 35-hour week, to encourage more work, and tweaked income tax bands, generally in favor of the wealthy.

But, fearing social unrest, he balked at deeper structural reforms, leaving untouched the welfare state and a rigid labor market that has made French firms increasingly uncompetitive and contributed to a record 70 billion euro trade deficit in 2011.

Sarkozy was lauded for showing leadership during the 2008 financial crisis. He was criticized for allowing the public deficit to swell - due partly to tax cuts worth some 15 billion euros a year. That left public finances so vulnerable that Standard & Poor's downgraded France's AAA credit rating for the first time last month - a blow Sarkozy said in advance could be "the death of me."

France's state auditor warned this month that as things stand it would take 10 years to reach budgetary equilibrium.

"It was an absolutely huge mistake to think he could solve the crisis by increasing the public debt," said economist Jacques Attali, who has worked for left-wing governments but also advised Sarkozy when he reached out to centrists and some Socialists early in his term.

Sarkozy recently announced a blitz of measures to lower labor costs by reducing payroll charges on companies and raising sales tax instead, saying France faces a crisis unless it boosts competitiveness.

"The fact he is rushing these reforms through now, at the peak of the euro zone crisis, means he cannot use the 2008 crisis as an excuse for not doing them earlier," said Attali. "He cannot possibly say he has done the best he could."

When Sarkozy took office the economy was growing at a 2.1 percent clip and unemployment was 8 percent. On his watch, as crisis battered the world economy, growth has dwindled to zero and the jobless rate is at a 12-year high of 9.3 percent.

Despite a reduction in civil service headcount, public spending has risen to 57 percent of gross domestic product, second only to Demark in the EU, from 53 percent in 2006. The public debt and deficit have swollen to 85 percent and 5.5 percent of GDP from 64 percent and 2.3 percent respectively.

"He was elected as the candidate of purchasing power so he favored consumption over investment, ignored the trade gap, and put France on a Greek-style path," said economist Jacques Delpla. "Whoever wins the election, growth will stay weak."

THE NON-PRESIDENTIAL PRESIDENT

Aside from the poor economic figures, Sarkozy's biggest barrier to re-election may be his personal style, a major reason behind his 68 percent disapproval rating.

Novelist Yasmina Reza, who accompanied his 2007 campaign and wrote a character study, noted a childlike restlessness, a habit of bolting down meals and snacking all day, an inability to be alone and an obsession with asking: "Did you see me? Was I OK?."

She picked out how he differed from the French presidential norm: he's boastful, sentimental, tactile, sharp-tongued and has a short attention span. He dislikes train journeys and prefers the city to the countryside, looking famously ill-at-ease astride a stocky white stallion for a rural campaign photoshoot.

Sarkozy raised eyebrows with his party at Fouquet's, on the Champs Elysees, with corporate millionaires and rock star Johnny Hallyday - a tax exile resident in Switzerland - and a gaudy victory cake with a "Tricolore" Arc de Triomphe on top.

Soon afterwards, his leaked text messages revealed a soap-opera private life as his second wife Cecilia left, causing him visible pain, and he began a whirlwind romance with Bruni. Paparazzi had a field day as he whisked the striking-looking singer to Disneyland Paris - a huge taste faux-pas for some French - and to Jordan and Egypt.

Within a year of his election, two-thirds of respondents in polls had a negative opinion of him, a record at that stage. Left-wing intellectuals sniffed that the "bling bling" Sarkozy had "pulverized" the presidential institution.

"People wanted energy, but they didn't necessarily want Ray-Bans and Rolexes," explains Socialist lawmaker Christian Paul.

Bruni, ironically, has used her influence to tone down Sarkozy's manner. She also honed his dress sense. His efforts to appear more presidential were clear when the birth of their first child last year was kept well out of the public eye.

The Italian-born first lady has steered him towards classic literature and films. Sarkozy keeps in shape with daily jogging but now avoids the suntan he sported early on. Already a teetotaller, he now eats healthily and shuns junk food.

"There is not the same arrogance, or the uncouth outbursts, that fed my sketches at the start," Le Monde cartoonist Plantu told Reuters. He has drawn countless caricatures of a crazed or demonic-looking Sarkozy, often with flies circling his head.

"The packaging has changed, even if he's the same on the inside, and he doesn't merit the same thrashing. I don't think we can be so certain he will lose the election," Plantu said.

But it may be too late to change Sarkozy's image.

THE SHAPE OF THE CAMPAIGN

Raised in an upmarket Parisian suburb, Sarkozy differs from most politicians of his rank by not having a rural support base.

He has rented a no-frills 1960s office building near the UMP's headquarters in the low-key 15th arrondissement of Paris to run his campaign, and has re-hired Emmanuelle Mignon, a former adviser, to steer the program.

Aides say he wants to run things mostly himself, although he has succumbed to party pressure to announce his candidacy in mid-February, earlier than he had planned, and likely in the wake of a successful Greek bailout deal.

"This will be an election where just when everything seemed lost, it will rise again from the ashes," Sarkozy told aides at a recent meeting, amid mutterings of low-morale in his camp. "When I get into the campaign, you will not be disappointed."

He set the stage this week with an interview with conservative-leaning Le Figaro magazine in which he pledged to overhaul the education system and make the jobless work for their benefits. He also sounded a tough note on immigration, saying he would tighten procedures for asylum seekers and for foreigners accessing housing and benefits.

Sarkozy laid his campaign track in a New Year address that set the way for a sudden rush of activity to cut company payroll taxes, create a financial transactions tax and loosen the 35-hour week law - a new focus on export markets over domestic spending that opponents say is too late to be convincing.
