Student jailed for Muamba tweets loses appeal
Associated Press Sports
updated 2:14 p.m. ET March 30, 2012
SWANSEA, Wales (AP) -A student who was given a jail sentence for mocking Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba on Twitter has lost his appeal.
Liam Stacey, a 21-year-old student at Swansea University, admitted to a charge of inciting racial hatred with his tweets following Muamba's collapse on the field and was sentenced to 56 days in jail on Tuesday.
His appeal was dismissed by a High Court judge in Swansea on Friday. Judge Wyn Williams said Stacey "was intending to say what he said and was intending to produce the effect that he did."
Muamba's heart stopped beating on its own for 78 minutes after he collapsed during an FA Cup quarterfinal match against Tottenham on March 17. He remains hospitalized in intensive care.

Canada to pull the penny from circulation
(Image credit: Canadian Royal Mint)The Canadian government announced on Thursday that it plans to pull the penny from circulation at the end of 2012, saying the copper-coated currency is more expensive for the Royal Canadian Mint to produce than its actual currency value.
"Pennies take up too much space on our dressers at home. They take up far too much time for small businesses trying to grow and create jobs," said Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. He also said it costs 1.5 cents to produce each penny.
"We will, therefore, stop making them," he said.
Nonetheless, the news has been causing quite a stir across Twitter today.
The U.S. faces a similar dilemma, where it costs nearly two cents to produce a single penny. U.S. pennies are in fact composed primarily of zinc, and have a thin copper coating. The Wall Street Journal wrote that the Obama Administration has proposed using less expensive materials in the production of pennies and nickels, but public misinformation on the perceived value of coins would likely stir up controversy.
It could also be disastrous news for at least one Portland, Oregon, nightclub.
During the 2008 presidential campaign, Obama discussed phasing out the penny, saying, "We have been trying to eliminate the penny for quite some time?it always comes back. I need to find out who is lobbying to keep the penny." However, Obama said that fellow presidential Illinois native Abraham Lincoln shouldn't be phased out from our currency. "Oh, you think it's Illinois? You're blaming us?" he joked. "I will seriously consider eliminating the penny as long as we find another place for Lincoln to land." Lincoln, of course, already graces the front of the $5 bill.
The Canadian penny will still be accepted indefinitely as a form of currency, but the government says it will eventually require cash transactions to be rounded to the nearest five-cent increment. Customers are already forbidden from using more than 25 pennies in a single purchase.
"The penny has simply outlived its purpose," said Senator Irving Gerstein. "It is a piece of currency, quite frankly, that lacks currency."
The Associated Press notes that some countries have already eliminated pennies or their monetary equivalent from circulation, including Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Israel, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland and Brazil.

Light on Landfills: Solar energy covers turn maxed-out landfills into solar farms
Hickory Ridge landfill outside of Atlanta, GA, is full. Like most landfills that reach capacity, it was capped to contain its noxious mix of debris that will slowly degrade over the decades and centuries to come. But unlike most, Hickory Ridge glistens on a sunny day due its over 7,000 thin-film photovoltaic solar panels plastered to a geomembrane that has been stretched over the hill like a swim cap.
The goal for this new capping system is to create an alternative to traditional landfill covers that will create revenue, boost renewable energy use, and utilize obsolete land, said Mark Roberts, Senior Project Manager for HDR Engineering Inc., the company which developed the technology.
Normally when a landfill closes, the waste is sealed using a polyethylene cap, buried under a couple feet of compacted soil and seeded with grass. The grassy knoll is then effectively useless, albeit somewhat pleasing to the eye.
In contrast, a solar energy cover aims to eliminate the typical maintenance costs of mowing and soil replacement, and instead allows a closed landfill to continue being useful by?generating revenue through renewable energy production. This new system uses a durable geomembrane constructed for roofs and fastens it to the landfill with vertical anchor trenches. The geomembrane-covered landfill slopes then serve as a secure and clean surface for the solar panels.
Much of the cost associated with solar caps occurs during the initial stage of buying and installing the solar panels (the project at Hickory Ridge cost roughly $5 million, $2 million of which was offset by federal stimulus money through the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority). This cost (Republic Services, the owner of Hickory Ridge landfill, was unable to disclose the agreed rate)?will slowly be regained as the solar energy is sold back to the local utility.
This is exactly what?s taking place at Hickory Ridge. It?s now the world?s largest solar cap, producing 1 megawatt (MW) of electricity, which is enough to power about 225 homes, or offset the total energy use of the landfill itself. And, it?s not the lone example.
The first solar energy cover was installed in San Antonio, TX., in 2008 at a landfill called Tessman Road. Others exist in Mass., NY, and NJ. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are about 10,000 old municipal landfills in the United States that could potentially serve as the groundwork for renewable energy projects. Many of these landfills are located on the outskirts of cities and already possess the necessary infrastructure for solar power. Hickory Ridge landfill did.
And as I climbed the green rubbery slopes of Hickory Ridge landfill last Thursday, its solar-covered apex loomed above prompting me to think about this odd nexus of materials ? garbage and solar. Not only was I observing a fairly new achievement in engineering, to me it also seemed to be something more meaningful. Below my feet were 9 million cubic yards of garbage, a stark representation of our world?s waste, yet, it had been capped with solar panels, a symbol for abundant, clean energy. It was like walking through the streets of Rome and seeing advancements in civilizations built upon one another.
I was witnessing a small step forward.
?We?re trying to change the perception that landfills are the great evil,? said Andy Keith, Environmental Specialist, Republic Services, ?They aren?t evil. They can be sources of green energy and could be an asset to the community instead of a liability.?
Keith is drawing on a when given lemons make lemonade way of thinking, and it?s helping spur innovation.
While the future is literally bright for solar energy covered landfills,?landfills are not the final destination for these caps. HDR Engineering Inc. is looking to design these solar energy covers for coal combustion product monofills and impoundments around the country and internationally, and the EPA is looking to use them for brownfields.

New statin regimen, unrecognized heart disease symptoms, new imaging innovations among research from Mount Sinai
Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers presented 86 abstracts and plenary sessions at the American College of Cardiology's (ACC) 61st Annual Scientific Session, including ground-breaking research on aggressive statin therapy, the prevalence of unrecognized cardiovascular disease symptoms in women, and morbidity associated with non-adherence to medication after stent implantation. The meeting took place March 23-27, 2012 in Chicago.
- Mount Sinai Researchers Show Aggressive Statin Regimen Reduces Fat Content in Coronary Blockage That Can Lead to Acute Thrombosis: Results from the YELLOW Trial
Of 87 patients enrolled in a Mount Sinai trial, half were treated with an aggressive regimen (40 mg) of Rosuvastatin, and the other half received standard lipid therapy. After seven weeks, the group that took Rosuvastatin displayed a 22 percent reduction in the amount of fat in the blockage, while the group with standard lipid therapy showed no significant changes.
"This study provides new scientific information documenting the beneficial effects of aggressive lipid lowering therapy in high-risk patients with coronary artery disease," said Annapoorna Kini, MD, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "Furthermore, the YELLOW trial opens new avenues for evaluating the response of novel therapies in men and women in the United States and abroad."
- Mount Sinai-Led Study Finds Cardiovascular Disease Screening of 3,000 Women in OB/GYN Clinics Identifies Risk Factors and Symptoms
A multicenter study of 3,000 women in OB/GYN clinics across the United States, found that 87 percent had unrecognized cardiovascular disease risk factors and 42 percent had symptoms. More than half of women with no primary care provider were unaware that their cholesterol and weight put them at risk.
"Our study indicates that heart disease screening in OB/GYN clinics can play a crucial role in heart disease prevention and earlier intervention," says lead researcher, Roxana Mehran, MD, Professor of Cardiology, and Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Many of the women we screened did not have primary care physicians and were unaware that they were having symptoms of heart disease."
- Mount Sinai Develops New Imaging Approach To Visualize How Blood Flows Through The Heart
Partho Sengupta, MD, Director of Cardiac Ultrasound Research and Jagat Narula, MD, PhD, Director of Cardiovascular Imaging and Professor of Cardiology have assembled a worldwide team of researchers developing novel ways of visualizing directional flow of blood through the heart and its behavior in different disease states as portrayed in a publication that will be released in the March issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology-Imaging. Using the same methodology, in a study presented at ACC, they characterized the effects of abnormal electrical behavior on the blood swirling through the chambers of the failing heart. This discovery will help improve diagnosis of heart failure and help researchers identify novel ways of using pacemaker therapy for treating it.
"This new imaging approach may help us design better therapeutic options for failing hearts," said Dr. Sengupta. "Seeing how blood flows through the patient's heart will allow us to personalize valve design and interventional procedures so that patients get optimal blood flow in their heart."
Dr. Narula believes that this technology will revolutionize the ultrasound field.
Dr. Narula was also recognized by the ACC with its Gifted Educator Award at the meeting.
- People Who Do Not Take Their Anti-Clotting Medication Have an Increased Risk of Stent Thrombosis: The PARIS Registry
To avoid stent thrombosis, a devastating and often deadly complication after coronary stent implantation, patients are required to take dual antiplatelet therapy, a combination of aspirin and a blood thinner. A multinational research team led by Roxana Mehran, MD, found that patients who did not adhere to the dual antiplatelet regimen six months after stent implantation had a four-fold increased risk for stent thrombosis. The team evaluated self-reported adherence among 5,016 patients. Of these, 310 reported that their treatment course had been interrupted, or that they stopped taking the therapy altogether.
"While only 310 patients claimed to be non-adherent, we expect the number may be much higher," said Dr. Mehran. "These findings show a very high likelihood of a major clinical event in these patients, demonstrating that continued education and monitoring of these patients is critical."
- People With Chronic Kidney Disease Are at Greater Risk of Developing Blood Clots
Mount Sinai researchers found in two studies that people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) develop blood clots much faster than healthy adults, and as CKD gets worse, so do the blood clots. They also found people with CKD and diabetes had more pathologic features of high-risk atherosclerotic plaque in their arteries than people with diabetes alone.
"We knew that chronic kidney disease increased risk for the development of adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes, but our study is among the first to show that CKD substantially increases clot strength and the rate at which clots develop," said Usman Baber, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "These results demonstrate a significant need to closely monitor the tens of millions of Americans with CKD to reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event."
- The Anticoagulant Bivalirudin Shows Promise in Significantly Reducing Complications Following Balloon Aortic Valvulplasty (BAV): The BRAVO Trial
The blood thinner bivalirudin has been associated with significant reduction in adverse events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty, compared to heparin, but Mount Sinai is the first center in the country to study its use in balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV), a procedure that uses a balloon to open a narrowed aortic valve.
In a retrospective analysis led by George Dangas, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and presented in four abstracts at ACC by Jennifer Yu, a research fellow at Mount Sinai, the research team found that heparin caused major bleeding in 13.1 percent of cases where bivalirudin caused bleeding in only 4.9 percent of cases.
"The majority of the patients undergoing balloon aortic valvuloplasty are elderly and frail, and the larger sheath sizes required contribute to significant rates of bleeding complications," said Dr. Dangas. "The BRAVO data show that bivalirudin is a promising agent in significantly reducing bleeding events and improving clinical outcomes in BAV."
Additional Mount Sinai Presentations of Interest
In total, Mount Sinai researchers participated in 35 plenary sessions and 51 abstract presentations at the ACC meeting. Other notable presentations included:
- Data on a new cardiac nuclear imaging system that drastically reduces radiation exposure to medical staff.
- In a plenary session, Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Medical Center and Director of Mount Sinai Heart addressed the growing evidence connecting heart disease to cognitive decline and dementia.
- Two oral presentations on fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), a disease of the arteries that generally affects women in their prime: The first showed that an S-curve in the carotid artery may indicate that the disease is present. If FMD is diagnosed appropriately it is very treatable; if not, it can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, and aneurysms. The second presentation provided the first observational data of people with FMD who have experienced an arterial dissection, a dangerous condition associated with significant morbidity including heart attack, stroke, and artery rupture, if left untreated.
"The hard work and dedication of our outstanding physician-scientists is exemplified by the enormous presence Mount Sinai has at ACC this year," said Dr. Fuster. "I am very proud of the efforts of my colleagues in Mount Sinai Heart in making such significant contributions to our field that will help change the way we practice cardiovascular medicine."
Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Named a "Legend of Cardiovascular Medicine" by the ACC
Dr. Fuster was named a "Legend of Cardiovascular Medicine," a lecture award established this year by the ACC that recognizes his international stature as an innovator and leader in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Fuster serves several roles at Mount Sinai, including Physician-in-Chief, The Mount Sinai Medical Center, Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute and the Marie-Jose and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health, Director of Mount Sinai Heart, and the Richard Gorlin, MD/Heart Research Foundation Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Customs rule change would expand definition of family to include ...
BY STEVE ROTHAUS, SROTHAUS@MIAMIHERALD.COM
A proposed federal rule change would expand the definition of ?family? and allow nonmarried couples and others who live in one household and are traveling abroad together to reenter the United States with a single U.S. Customs declaration.
?It?s really an acknowledgement of what?s obvious to most people: that gay families are families and should be treated as such when they enter the United States,? said Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality in New York.
In addition to adults in committed, long-term relationships, the rule change would also include foster children, stepchildren, half-siblings, legal wards, other dependents, according to the proposal by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security and the Treasury departments.
Nowhere does the proposed rule change mention gay or lesbian partners. The wording specifies ?two adult individuals in a committed relationship wherein the partners share financial assets and obligations,? not including ?roommates or other cohabitants.?
Also, the change removes the phrase ?regardless of age? to include adult partners, children and others. The proposal will be officially released Tuesday for comments and could take effect in two months.
Customs estimates an annual savings of 72,600 ?burden hours? under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995. The government believes the change would effect more than a million travelers a year or four minutes per response.
Gay activists say the savings go beyond dollars.
At present, gay couples traveling together must each go through Customs separately.
?I?ve experienced it personally and it?s humiliating,? said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, the state?s leading gay-rights group. ?I know of people returning from their honeymoon and it?s a particularly cruel slap in the face.?
Also, many gay families today travel with their children. ?We should never have to explain to our child why the person at the desk says we?re not family,? said Smith, who co-parents son Logan, nearly 11 months, with wife Andrea Smith.
Key West real estate brokers Rudy Molinet and Harry Hoehn, partners for 19 years, were married in 2003 in Canada. Last September, they had their ?lunch counter moment? when confronted by a Customs official at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
?When Harry and I approached the customs officer to enter, we walked up together as did every other married couple in line. I was ordered to ?get back in line, only families can come up here together,?? Molinet wrote on his personal blog.
?My partner was like, ?Oh my God, what?s going to happen??? Molinet said Monday.
Molinet said he and Hoehn, returning to the U.S. from Paris, faced off with the armed Customs agent.
?We were very professional. We did not get irate. If you do get irate, they arrest you,? Molinet said. ?He let us through because we stood our ground. Begrudgingly. Rudely, I might add. We were being treated like criminals. Some people might think it was not big deal, but it was a big deal. ... It?s a metaphor for all the things gays and lesbians go through.?
