The Best and Worst July 4th Movies

The 4th of July isn't just a celebration of our nation's independence, it's also one of the biggest days of the year for movie releases. Some of the most beloved blockbusters of all time have premiered on this date, filled with memorable fight scenes, explosions and witty one-liners. Going to see a movie on Independence Day is practically a national past-time at this point.

But for every perfectly awesome July 4th movie memory, there is a cringe-worthy box-office disaster. Sometimes audiences are lucky enough to get a "Back to the Future," other years, they're doomed with "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.'

To celebrate the highs and lows of the holiday, Moviefone presents a very special look at the best and worst 4th of July movie releases ever.

• 12. 'Red Sonja' (1985)

  "Sonja" is the only time that <em>Arnold Schwarzenegger</em> out-acted someone.

• 11. 'Superman Returns' (2006)

  There's nothing more American than a Superman movie on the 4th of the July. However, this version starring Brandon Routh was both boring and filled with listless visuals.

• 10. 'Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie' (1995)

  Do you hear that? That's the sound of an entire generation of "Power Ranger" fans becoming totally embarrassed.

• 9. 'The Last Airbender' (2010)

  On top of having a six percent <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last_airbender/" target="_hplink">Rotten Tomatoes score</a>, M. Night Shyamalan's mess of a movie was also accused of being really racist.

• 8. 'Out to Sea' (1997)

  Why couldn't Hollywood just let Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon enjoy their twilight years? This is making <em>us</em> feel old and tired.

• 7. 'Problem Child 2' (1991)

  "PC 2" answered all the lingering questions from the first movie, like "What would happen if nothing changed and we just got more of the same, only not as funny?"

• 6. 'Judge Dredd' (1995)

  Fans of the comic were not happy with this sloppy adaptation, where Sly Stallone stumbles around shouting "I am the law!"

• 5. 'The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle' (2000)

  This was the first warning sign that De Niro was starting to phone it in -- but no one listened.

• 4. 'The Patriot' (2000)

  The story of America's fight for independence has been told plenty of times, but here, audiences got one that was ridiculously inaccurate.

• 3. 'Men in Black II' (2002)

  It's just like the first "Men in Black" -- except totally devoid of any charm.

• 2. 'License to Wed' (2007)

  John Krasinski looked almost embarrassed to be in this 2007 comedy, about an engaged couple put through a marriage preparation course.

• 1. 'Wild, Wild West' (1999)

  Well at least, uh, Kenneth Branagh was in it?

• 12. 'Innerspace' (1987)

  Martin Short isn't in enough movies. That is all.

• 11. 'A League of Their Own' (1992)

  A '90s favorite that gave us terrific performances from Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and, yes, Madonna.

• 10. 'South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut' (1999)

  Everyone was expecting a gleeful display of filth and immature vulgarity, and they got that --- along with an amazing movie musical.

• 9. 'Armageddon'

  Space dementia! Sending oil drillers into space! Animal crackers as foreplay! This movie played it all so seriously, and that took some real guts.

• 8. 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder' (1990)

  If you're going to celebrate Christmas in July, then John McClane has to come along.

• 7. 'Apollo 13' (1995)

  Even though recorded history told us everything had worked out fine, audiences were still on the edge of their seat, wondering if the astronauts would make it home.

• 6. 'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986)

  How could this movie flop? Are you telling us that America isn't ready for a martial arts-comedy-horror starring a wise crackin' Kurt Russell? Give it some time; they'll come around.

• 5. 'Spider-Man 2' (2004)

  The first "perfect" superhero movie.

• 4. 'Men in Black' (1997)

  Only Big Willie Style could give us a movie <em>and</em> song about shadowy government operatives and make it the hot jam of the summer.

• 3. 'Independence Day' (1996)

  In Jeff Goldblum (and Bill Pullman!), we trust.

• 2. 'Back to the Future' (1985)

  Doc Brown, Marty McFly, Biff -- at this point, "BTTF" has transcended the 4th of July.

• 1. 'T2: Judgement Day' (1991)

  The James Cameron sequel is still one of the most epic epics to ever epic.

• Honorable Mention: Michael Bay's 'Transformers'

  Michael Bay's 'Transformers' is neither good nor bad. It is only Bay.
