(AP) ? "Contraband" managed to steal the top slot away from competitors at the weekend box office.

The Universal action drama film starring Mark Wahlberg as a reformed smuggler debuted above expectations at No. 1 with $24 million, while Disney's 3-D rerelease of "Beauty and the Beast" waltzed into the No. 2 position with $18.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Both films helped boost Hollywood's business after a sluggish holiday season.

"It's great to have an uptick in the total box office, and Universal is thrilled that 'Contraband' was the driving force behind that," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for the studio. "I think it's combination of a great marketing campaign, audiences love Mark Wahlberg and (producer) Working Title made a terrific movie, particularly for the cost."

"Joyful Noise," the Warner Bros.' musical comedy starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, opened below expectations with $11.3 million in the No. 4 spot behind Paramount's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," which earned $11.5 million in its fifth week, bringing the total haul of the fourth installment of the Tom Cruise action franchise to $186.7 million.

"The Devil Inside," Paramount's horror film that scared up a massive $33.7 million debut last weekend, experienced a steep 77 percent drop in its second weekend, coming in at No. 6 with $7.9 million. Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the film's terrifying plunge didn't matter because the independently produced movie already made a huge profit.

"Horror movies typically drop big, but that is a huge drop," said Dergarabedian. "It doesn't matter because 'Devil Inside' is a profit-making machine. If your budget is low enough, who cares if it drops big and you're making money? It's already one of the most profitable films of the past year, so there's nothing really to complain about there."

Overall domestic revenues totaled $114.5 million, on par with the same weekend last year, when "The Green Hornet" led with $33.5 million and the box office totaled $115 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

___

3. "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," $11.5 million ($16.8 million international).

The 2012 Golden Globes Were...Fine

The 2012 Golden Globes have come and gone, and unfortunately, they did little else besides that.

If you asked most people to recount their favorite moments from Sunday's telecast, you'll certainly hear about Seth Rogen's poorly-timed erection or the challenge Madonna extended to Ricky Gervais. (We would have run too.) But aside from one or [...]

Antarctic lake bid edges closer

An ambitious plan to explore a vast lake trapped beneath the Antarctic ice is a step closer to becoming reality.

An advance party has braved freezing temperatures to set up vital equipment and supplies at Lake Ellsworth.

The project by UK engineers to drill through the two-mile-thick ice-sheet is scheduled for the end of the year.

The aims are to search for signs of life in the waters and to extract sediments from the lake floor to better understand the past climate.

It is is one of the most challenging British scientific projects for years.

The task is so complex that preparations have had to be spread over two Antarctic summer seasons.

In the first phase a "tractor train" has just hauled nearly 70 tonnes of equipment from an ice runway at Union Glacier through the Ellsworth mountains to the lake site.

The journey of about 400km (150 miles) involved crossing a mix of deep snow and rock-hard ice and took three days.

It is really harsh and working there with equipment means you have to use thin gloves ?

End Quote Andy Tait British Antarctic Survey

Once there, a four-man team stored the equipment and "winterised" it to cope with the incredibly low temperatures to come.

Wind-blown snow is expected to partially cover the gear but GPS markers fixed to the corners of the site will help locate it again.

The area around Lake Ellsworth is notorious for its deep cold and constant winds.

Lake Ellsworth is one of more than 400 sub-glacial lakes in Antarctica and was chosen for the drilling operation because of its relative accessibility.

One of the advance team, Andy Tait of the British Antarctic Survey, now back in the UK, told me about the sheer difficultly of conditions.

"The maximum summer temperature is minus 20 and with a wind of something like 30 knots you can imagine the cold.

"It is really harsh and working there with equipment means you have to use thin gloves - it is really cold."

But the delivery of equipment is just one part of the preparations for the drilling and sampling operation.

Key components are still being manufactured and tested before they can be shipped south.

Most challenging is the complex sampling probe which has been designed to cope with a combination of extremely high pressures and extremely low temperatures.

It must also be assembled and delivered in conditions of the highest possible sterility.

For the first time in Antarctic exploration, an investigation is being planned with cleanliness standards higher than those of most surgeries.

Because one of the key aims is to search for signs of biology in the lake waters - one of the most tantalising questions - all possibility of contamination has to be eliminated.

How scientists will reach Lake Ellsworth

1. A hot water drill will melt through the frozen ice sheet, which is up to 3km (2 miles) thick. After drilling, they will have an estimated 24 hours to collect samples before the borehole re-freezes

2. A probe will be lowered through the borehole to capture water samples

3. A specialised corer will then recover sediment from the floor of the lake through the same borehole

Watch the team's animated explation of the planned drill.

Source: Subglacial Lake Ellsworth Consortium

I watched as one team worked in a clean room at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton.

Each hi-tech component - including the titanium sampling bottles and specially-engineered filters - has to be sterilised.

Inside the clean room where the probe is being developed and put together

And the final assembly of the 5.5m probe will take place inside a unique "tent" accessed by gloved inlets along its sides.

This November, the second phase of shipments will take place and the operation will begin in earnest.

The drilling will be carried out by a system using hot water and is expected to take three days.

Once the bore-hole is open providing access to the lake beneath the ice, the team will then have 24 hours in which to lower the sampling devices.

Computer modelling indicates that the hole will then start to re-freeze making it impossible to use.

The plan is to first lower the water sampling probe - a process that should take an hour - and then a corer to extract lake sediment.

According to Andy Tait, all eyes will be on the weather. Although many stages of the operation can be handled under cover, ideally conditions will be calm when the drilling starts.

The engineering, the planning, the science are impressively thorough - but Antarctica is the most challenging place on earth in which to work, and outcomes can never be certain.

ABC ditches 'Work It' sitcom (AP)

PASADENA, Calif. ? ABC's "Work It" is off duty.

The network said Saturday that the sitcom about two men who dress as women to look for work is off the schedule after only two episodes aired. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation had protested the series, saying it mocked the transgender community.

"Work It" attracted little interest from viewers. The Nielsen company said the second episode on Tuesday was seen by less than five million people.

GLAAD's Herndon Graddick said Saturday that it was an outdated show. But he said it started a dialogue about discrimination faced by transgender people.

UK tabloid editor tells of paper's antics (AP)

LONDON ? The editor of a British tabloid has outlined a culture where reporters exaggerate headlines, dramatize stories, and occasionally go too far.

Daily Star Editor Dawn Neesom was speaking at the judge-led inquiry into British media ethics set up in the wake of the phone hacking scandal centered on the now-defunct News of the World tabloid

She shied away from claims that her paper played fast and loose with the truth, but acknowledged that the paper's mission was "to put a smile on people's faces."

Neesom said Thursday: "Occasionally, I admit, we do cross lines. But we do have standards."

The Star is owned by media magnate Richard Desmond, who is also to give evidence at the inquiry.

Desmond also publishes the Daily Express and celebrity magazines OK! and New!

Hawks players fully support union on realignment

Article updated: 1/8/2012 9:40 PM

John Scott, the Blackhawks? union representative, said he and his teammates are fully behind the decision by the NHL Players Association to withhold its consent for realignment.

The league on Friday scrapped its four-conference realignment plan for the 2012-13 season after the NHLPA refused to go along without any input.

Scott and other Hawks agreed they are concerned with the fact there would be eight teams in two conferences and seven in the other two, making it harder for the teams with eight clubs to make the playoffs.

The players also want the issue of travel addressed, particularly for those teams in the east who would have worse schedules.

?We?re willing to talk with them and work with them, but it was one of those things where (the NHL) made a decision and put out a headline like it was a done deal and we really had no input in the whole discussion,? Scott said.

?We just wanted to have a few talks with them to go through it about, obviously, the eight teams in one conference, seven in the other, all the travel and playoff systems. We weren?t really part of that discussion.?

Scott took part in a conference call with union executive director Donald Fehr after polling his Hawks teammates.

?It was a unanimous decision that we can?t accept it at this time,? Scott said. ?There are so many unknowns.?

You would think playing in the Western Conference, where travel can be brutal, would have the Hawks in favor of the new realignment plan.

The Hawks were scheduled to be in one of the eight-team conferences with Detroit, St. Louis, Nashville, Columbus, Minnesota, Winnipeg and Dallas.

?We?re the NHLPA, we?re a group, and who knows if you?re going to be on the East Coast one year or the West Coast,? Scott said. ?You have to look at it as a whole and make the best decision for everybody.?

Hawks defenseman Steve Montador, a former union rep with Buffalo, said the key for the players is the unbalanced conference format.

?The big thing is the playoffs and how a player wants to be able to make it into the playoffs,? Montador said. ?To give yourself a disadvantage based on where you play is not something that seems that fair.?

Scott doesn?t agree that this is the first salvo being fired by the union in what is expected to be a difficult negotiating process when the current collective bargaining agreement expires in September.

?It?s kind of two separate issues,? Scott said. ?Realignment will happen, it?s just that we need to be a part of the negotiations. The CBA is a completely different animal.?

Scott doesn?t anticipate another work stoppage in the fall.

?I think the game is in a good spot. We?re growing,? he said. ?I can?t see any reason why we can?t get something done.?

Uruguay Priority for 2012: to Increase Jobs

Escrito por Ana Luisa Brown ?? Imagen activa09 de enero de 2012, 06:10Montevideo, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) The priority of the Uruguayan Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MTSS) will be to increase jobs and strengthen relations with the companies, assured Eduardo Pereyra, National director of jobs.

? Pereyra, quoted by the presidential website, reported that from the first half of 2012 the platform called Via Work will be operating to allow all those interested easier access to jobs.

The MTSS is working, along with the Inter-American Development Bank, in a survey of over 700 thousand institutions to know about business demands, strategies and therefore be more accurate when qualifying people for certain jobs.

Pereyra said that the ministry conducted a national dialogue between May and October 2011 involving employers, unions and government in an initiative focused on the entry of women and young people into the labour market.

The discussions were supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the University of the Republic (UDELAR), emphasized Pereyra.

There were five lines of action, he said: the situation of teenagers and their employability and training and re-entry into the education system, productive enterprises, the incorporation of more women to employment, and the increase of the skilled labor force.

Sony Keeps Concepts Alive At CES 2012

IMG_5527Today at Sony's CES 2012 press conference, the company unveiled several PC concepts that are, well, just concepts. Kazuo Hirai took to the massive Sony stage deep within the Las Vegas Convention center and talked about the convergence of TV and computers. But no one cares about that marketing nonsense. It was the concepts they flashed on the screen that got everyone excited. But don't expect these products to hit the market. Companies are not supposed to sell concepts. They're concepts, not products.

California Dream Act foes' petition drive falls short

Jonathan Luna and Yohana Hinojosa

January 7, 2012

Reporting from Sacramento -- Critics of illegal immigration announced Friday that they were unable to obtain the needed 500,000 petition signatures to ask voters to repeal the California Dream Act.

The two-part measure, which allows undocumented immigrants access to both public and private financial aid at UC and Cal State campuses and at community colleges, was signed into law last year by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The failure "is disappointing news," said Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-San Bernardino), the public face of the initiative drive, in an email to supporters.

But he added, "It is no less of a warning to Gov. Brown, and every Democrat legislator who voted to create a new entitlement program for illegals while the state still has a budget deficit over $9 billion, and cannot even meet it's obligation to legal California students."

It was a rough week for Donnelly, the Assembly's only tea party member. On Wednesday, he was detained by Ontario airport police for trying to take a loaded handgun in his briefcase through the security checkpoint. Donnelly said he had forgotten the weapon was there.

a new opinion in Telecommunications about Apple iPhone 4 16 GB

All of my friends and associates seemed to have iPhones and I often jealously watched them browse the internet on the move so it was time to take the plunge, off to my local Network 3 store I went to pick up the shiny beast. I had already decided the colour I wanted before seeing it and that was the newly released 'White' iPhone, everyone I knew at the time had a black one and it's always nice to be different!

I bought the phone on a 24 month contract at ?30 a month which included 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb of internet usage. I thought this was a fair deal at the time as I had checked other networks which seemed a lot more expensive than 3 with the handset priced at only ?99.

***Inside the box***
Here it is! I walked out of the 3 shop proudly with my new phone in its little posh looking plastic box. I don't know what my problem is with Apple's packaging but it always takes me a while to actually get inside, once inside I found;

-The Phone (Very nice looking indeed)
-Wall charger and USB wire
-Earphones
And the usual paper associated with electronic items... Not really a proper instruction manual but it is very easy to set up.

To set the iPhone up you must plug it into a computer and pair it with iTunes which can be rather annoying but I guess it must be done. It was quite simple to do, plugged it in and waited for the software to do its thing and voila! My beast was alive and greeted me with a fantastic quality screen filled with lots of applications that I was about to discover :)

***Using the phone***
The phone is extremely easy to use considering how powerful and feature packed it is. The home screen contains all of the short cuts to various applications such as 'Phone', obviously click it if you want to make a phone call, 'Messages', 'Safari - Apples internet browser', etc.. I personally love the set-up of the phones menus and I find it extremely easy to use.

I made my first phone call and I remember being extremely impressed about the very clear sound through the earpiece and the person on the other end said I sounded better than calling on my last phone which must be a good sign. I did notice however that the iPhone without a case fitted is quite sharp to hold, the edges of the phone are not as rounded as the older iPhones that I had used in the past but luckily Network 3 had included a case which fixed that issue.

So Nick, what can the iPhone do apart from making phone calls?

The iPhone is a smartphone and in my opinion one of the best I've seen. It has the full iPod software installed which allows you to store and listen to all of your favorite music. You can buy your tunes on the phone itself without going through the hassle of plugging it into the computer and all of the messing around. When you open the iTunes store you are greeted with all of the music you could ever wish for and I doubt that there is anyone left out. The song prices are clearly marked (Usually costing around 69p - 99p per track) and to buy you simply press 'buy-now' and the song will be on your iPhone ready for enjoyment within a minute. Music videos and certain TV shows are often available for download too which makes the phone very interesting.

The phones audio is very good and the quality is fantastic, the earphones provided do not give the best sound quality which is a shame. They are good enough for me but I have tried other brands and they are much better. The earphones have a microphone built in which allows you to talk hands free, the phone does however have speakerphone built in but if you're listening to music at the same time as someone calling you can easily answer.

***Using the internet***

This phone has both the 3G connectivity which uses your network provider's connection and of course WiFi which can be used free of charge in your home, Starbucks etc.

All of the internet browsing is done through the 'Safari' shortcut on the home display which is absolutely fabulous. You can browse pretty much any website you want and make Google your homepage if need be. I was so impressed with the internet browsing that it was not long until my laptop was retired to the cupboard and I was using my iPhone for everything - that is the reason I haven't been on Dooyoo in a while..... It takes quite a long time typing and rating on the iPhone and that is the only downfall I have found so far.

TV???
YES!! You can watch TV on your iPhone :) I discovered this by accident one night when I decided to try BBC iPlayers website and discovered there is now an application for iPhone to stream videos straight from the site, this includes ITV too which is extremely handy. The picture and sound is extremely good and in all honesty I would chuck my TV in the bin right now if it was just me living in the house. I now watch all of my programs straight from the iPhone whether I'm in the house or on the move (Beware that it can be rather costly on some mobile provider's tariffs if you go over your internet usage - I found this out from experience! Ooops)

***Applications***

Now this must be one of the most exciting features of the iPhone - the App Store! The saying 'There's an App for that', is rather true. You can find useful applications for almost anything you want and most are free to purchase with others costing fair amounts. Here are some of the Apps that I use on a daily basis (Gosh what would I do without my iPhone?)

*EBay
*PayPal
*Facebook
*Lloyd's TSB internet banking
*BBC iPlayer
*ITV Player
*Skype
*Lots of games and I'm not going to mention any more as there are too many loaded on my phone right now, if you have any questions at all please do ask and I'll do my best to answer as I don't want to make this review too long.

***Camera***

Now this is one of my most used features, the camera is a 5mp I believe and the quality is absolutely incredible. You can take videos of pretty much any length and with 16GB of phone storage you can store many of them! I currently have 38 videos of various lengths and 1346 photos, these accompanied with all of the music that I have stored on the phone has unfortunately filled my memory to capacity but that's not a problem as I can transfer all of your pictures and videos to my computer using the easy iTunes software. This is done in a matter of a few minutes.

There is also a camera on the front of the iPhone which is there for using Apple's facetime feature. If your friends with the iPhone 4 are in WiFi range then you can make video calls and talk face to face. I have not used this and doubt that I ever will but it is handy. I mainly use the front camera as a mirror 

***Quality of the handset - Battery etc***

Now the quality of the handset is very impressive. Now I believe that the phones front and back panels are glass, scary I know! I have owned the phone for about 6 months now and I've used the case provided the whole time, I've dropped it 6 times EEEK! But I have been very lucky and the glass panels have not even got a single mark on them. I usually find with smartphones that their large screens are easily marked normally as they are made from plastic, the iPhone does not suffer from this. My screen is not at all protected and I do not look after it too well as I just chuck it in my pocket when not in use etc. However there is not one mark on my screen, it's like new! The protective case is a must though, if you drop this on concrete without a case it will not bounce like the good old Nokia's, it will smash and it won't be very pretty!

The handset is very basic; there's just one main button on the bottom, which is used for exiting certain screens while using the handset etc. There is also an 'On/Off' button on the top and a very handy side button for turning the silent mode on and off - Gone are the days of searching the phones menus for the silent mode. This button can be slightly annoying at times as it can be accidently moved in my pocket, maybe it's just me finding this but it is very rare that it happens.

Most reviews that I've read on iPhones complain about the battery life - mainly the older models. I use my phone probably much more than the average person and I easily get a whole day from the battery. I really cannot complain about the life of the battery as I've had far worse and comparing the features to the other phones that I have owned.... Well they cannot be compared to be honest! If I just used the phone for texting and calling I reckon I could stretch the battery to last 2 days which is still rather good. The charge time is very quick and mine takes roughly just under 2 hours for a full charge.

There are so many features with this phone that it's actually quite hard remembering them all. It has all of the usual features which include - Bluetooth, Alarm clock, calendar etc...

***Overall opinion***

This is a fabulous phone and I can see myself being extremely happy with it throughout the whole time of my contract. After my experience with this I'm quite happy to say that as soon as the iPhone 5 is released I will buy it without question. The phone looks stunning and has every feature that you could wish for and is not over priced considering everything that it does, I have now joined the iPhone gang and oh boy am I glad I did? Yes!

Summary: A fantastic phone that I will recommend to anyone.

Va. AG backs off call for GOP primary rule changes (AP)

RICHMOND, Va. ? Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is no longer pushing for a change in rules that kept two candidates off the state's March 6 Republican presidential primary ballot.

The Republican Party of Virginia determined that Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures of registered voters. The candidates have gone to court to challenge their exclusion from Virginia's ballot, which will include only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Cuccinelli, a Republican, said in a statement Saturday that ballot access laws need to be changed not for any candidate, but for the voters. On Sunday, however, Cuccinelli issued a statement saying that while he favors reducing hurdles to getting on the Virginia ballot, he "will not support efforts to apply such changes to the 2012 Presidential election."

Merman trawls his net through a sea of images, and presents what he finds from precious pearls to the flotsam and jetsam that scintillates him regardless, from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the sacred to the profane (and sometimes abject filth). Whilst the merman will frequently celebrate the beauty of the mermaidens, he has a strong predilection for his fellow mermen, of which you shall find many exquisite specimens here, amongst the other refined treasures that you may witness. Some of these mermen will have dispensed with the cockleshells that at other times hide their modesty in a moment of rapture and ravishment (ie NSFW on occasion). IT'S REALLY RATHER WONDERFUL WHEN PEOPLE IDENTIFY THE IMAGES THAT THEY POST.

Community helps victims of Christmas morning fire

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach family lost everything in a Christmas morning fire.

Mike and Jennifer Phillips and their newborn son were asleep, but Mike says a crackling noise woke him up around 3:00 a.m.?

He thought someone was breaking in to their Sierra Arch townhome, but he quickly realized the house was on fire.

Mike says smoke quickly filled the home and he worried they might not make it.

"The first window we hit I couldn't get it open and it was panic mode. You're taking in all that smoke and my wife is right there with my baby so you panic," he said.

They made their way to a second-story window, got out onto the roof and then were able to get down to the ground and away from the fire.

The Phillips told 13 News they have insurance and are living at a motel for now as they figure out what to do next.

It's not the memory they'd planned for their son's very first Christmas.

"Right now, I'm worried about the next few days, just making sure we have what we need to get things rolling and then we'll press forward from there," he added.

But the Virginia Beach community is stepping up to help. Janet Aguilar saw the family's story on 13 News and wanted to do something.

"The whole campaign started as a grassroots and it's evolved into something so much bigger than me, all thanks to everyone who's been so nice," Aguilar said.

She has reached out to dozens of businesses for donations and put together a silent auction to benefit the family.

The auction will start Monday, January 2, 2012, on Facebook and go until Friday at midnight.

If you'd like to bid in the auction, click the link to the Facebook group.

Investigators don't believe the fire was suspicious and say it's possible? Christmas tree lights played a role.
