VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach family lost everything in a Christmas morning fire.

Mike and Jennifer Phillips and their newborn son were asleep, but Mike says a crackling noise woke him up around 3:00 a.m.?

He thought someone was breaking in to their Sierra Arch townhome, but he quickly realized the house was on fire.

Mike says smoke quickly filled the home and he worried they might not make it.

"The first window we hit I couldn't get it open and it was panic mode. You're taking in all that smoke and my wife is right there with my baby so you panic," he said.

They made their way to a second-story window, got out onto the roof and then were able to get down to the ground and away from the fire.

The Phillips told 13 News they have insurance and are living at a motel for now as they figure out what to do next.

It's not the memory they'd planned for their son's very first Christmas.

"Right now, I'm worried about the next few days, just making sure we have what we need to get things rolling and then we'll press forward from there," he added.

But the Virginia Beach community is stepping up to help. Janet Aguilar saw the family's story on 13 News and wanted to do something.

"The whole campaign started as a grassroots and it's evolved into something so much bigger than me, all thanks to everyone who's been so nice," Aguilar said.

She has reached out to dozens of businesses for donations and put together a silent auction to benefit the family.

The auction will start Monday, January 2, 2012, on Facebook and go until Friday at midnight.

If you'd like to bid in the auction, click the link to the Facebook group.

Investigators don't believe the fire was suspicious and say it's possible? Christmas tree lights played a role.
