MOBILE, Alabama ? The sorry plight of the 2012 Auburn Tigers football team, changes at the Press-Register, and the city's attempt to squash outdoor smoking along Dauphin Street highlighted some of the humor during a rain-soaked Comic Cowboys parade this afternoon.
The 129th edition of the annual gaffe stroll during Fat Tuesday also featured satires on bullying, Notre Dame's porous showing during the BCS National Championship game, and stalled developments along Mobile's waterfront.
"It's really hard to say, they were all so good," Rob DuMont of Daphne said after the parade scurried past the Admiral Semmes Hotel along Government Street.
The politically incorrect razzing kicked off with the annual appearance of Queen Little Eva's float, a tradition of showcasing arguably the portliest queen of Mobile's annual Mardi Gras festivities.
The parade rushed along, arriving immediately after the Knights of Revelry's annual route was completed, as pouring rain arrived. While revelers were mostly wet, the parade was able to scurry through its route before the heaviest stuff arrived.
"It went by too fast," said Beverly Meadors of Birmingham, Ala.
Still, that didn't mean she didn't have a favorite float. Like most of the revelers ? especially Alabama Crimson Tide fans ? the parade provided an opportunity to stick it to their archrivals from Auburn.
"I'm an Alabama fan, so the $7.5 million buyout (of former head coach Gene Chizik following a three-win season) was great," Meadors said of a float that featured the drawing of a Tiger holding a sign that read, "7.5 million buyout. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy some more players?"
Meadors' friend, Debbie Porter, offered only a sob face over the continuous Auburn digs. But she did agree with Meadors on the clever humor of another float that linked Alabama quarterback and Mobile native AJ McCarron to Auburn through his girlfriend, Katherine Webb, who is an Auburn graduate.
"Now that was pretty good," Porter said.
DuMont also took particular interest in one of the floats that had a sign referencing Auburn's participation in the postseason. That sign had a picture of a blank t-shirt and simply stated, "Auburn 2012 commemorative bowl game t-shirt."
For Jennifer Redmond of Dothan, Ala., one of the floats picking on bullying actually struck an accord.
Redmond said she has young children and was a victim of bullying when she was younger. That float took a dig at the Alabama Education Association, whose executive secretary was recently referred to as a "schoolhouse bully" by the Retirement Systems of Alabama Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Bonner.
Others had a chuckle over the Cowboys' annual satire of the Press-Register, which has been referred to for years as the "Cash Register." This year, the jokes focused on the paper's switch to a three-day print edition.
"My wife worked there for 39 years," Ricky Stearns of Mobile said. "So that was the biggest one for me."
